At The Park: As Training Camp Ensues, So Do The 'Distractions'

Different Days, Same Song.

It hasn't been one week into Redskins training camp and already the drama unfolds.

We know that Albert Haynesworth continues to dominate much of the news coming from Redskins Park.

For the second straight day Haynesworth failed his conditioning test that consisted of him performing several 300-yard shuttle runs. As such, he did not join his teammates on the practice field, yet again.

Haynesworth may not be, but QB Donovan McNabb definitely looks in shape. Photo/CD Brown.

When we asked Skins' QB Donovan McNabb yesterday what he thought about Haynesworth not passing the conditioning test, he wasn't aware of the event at the time but did say, "I'm sure they're [coaching staff] going to handle the situation. We've all been through that at some point in our career."

Failed test aside, other players, also just hearing about the news on Day 1 of training camp are simply glad Haynesworth showed up at all. (Haynesworth was AWOL for OTAs and a mandatory mini camp).

“I don’t think it was disappointing", said RB Larry Johnson.

"He showed up, that’s what everyone wanted. I think that’s what all the fans and organization wanted to see. He still came to all the meetings and came out. Whatever he does after that is pretty much on him. Everyone’s glad, I’m glad, he showed up.”

WR Devin Thomas told us after finishing up an autograph session with the fans (he still remains a fan favorite), "I just want him to play. That's all I care about."

Coach Shanahan, who will afford Haynesworth another opportunity to get in shape, told reporters, "We will make sure he is in good football shape so once he hits that field he will be healthy. He will be able to contribute to our football team, but I don't want to put a guy out there before he is ready, before I know he is in shape. I know it is the best thing for him. He might not know that at this time, but I can guarantee you that with the big linemen that I have been with, the guys that are in the trenches, they still need to be in shape."

And with that, Haynesworth is again expected to take yet another conditioning test tomorrow (and perhaps the next day, and the next) that Shanahan called "a very minimal test that we've used for part of our workout program for a long time."

Hopefully, it won't take Haynesworth that long before he's in good, physical, ready-to-stomp-with-the-big-dawgs Pro Bowl caliber shape.

In other news, the Redskins' finally come to terms with first-round draft pick, Trent Williams, signing former Oklahoma Sooner to a 6 year $60 million dollar [done] deal, with $36.5 million guaranteed.

Williams didn't much want to talk about the money, saying, "If I go out there thinking about the bucks and not doing my job, I won't be here long. I just kind of put it behind me. I'm going to try to save and play my butt off."

Kinda the same sentiment we heard Albert Haynesworth (back on him, again?) utter when he was brought in as the highest paid defensive lineman, ever.

Williams, 21, was chosen No. 4 overall out of the University of Oklahoma, where he started 39-of-50 games for the Sooners, including 12 at left tackle and 27 on the right side.

The team also released defensive lineman Trey Jacobs and placed offensive lineman Mike Williams on the Reserve/Non-Football Illness list.

Still no word on whether McNabb will receive an extended contract with the team he hopes to turn into Championship material.

So, as the storylines continue out at Redskins Park, and the sun sets on Day 2, we end by quoting #5 where he said of Day 1, ..."you can put it behind you and get ready for tomorrow.

But, What About Orakpo?
Not much has been said about the now Sophomore linebacker Brian Orakpo, who had a breakout rookie season in '09.

We just so happened to stop by the Redskins store on site at training camping.

Despite all the hooplah over Haynesworth and McNabb this season, we were told the best selling jersey item continues to be that of Brian Orakpo.
