Monday in Sports!: Ovechkin surpasses Gretsky with 895th career goal!

Congrats Ovie!

Washington Capitals' left wing, Alexander Ovechkin, broke Wayne Gretsky's record of 894, scoring his 895th goal Sunday afternoon on the road against the New York Islanders. Ovechkin now holds the title of most hockey goals scored.

Ovie scored 895 goals in 1487 games, while Gretsky scored 894 goals in the same number of games.

Although the team lost to the Islanders, 4-1, Ovechkin's 895 scoring feat made the day special.

"So, emotional", the Capitals' captain said afterwards. "It was such a great, great night. But this is something crazy and I just said I'm probably going to need a couple more days or maybe a couple more weeks to realize what does it mean to be #1. But all I can say is I'm very proud."

Ovechkin isn't the only one who's ' very proud'.

Caps owner, Ted Leonsis, had this to say on Twitter/X about Ovie's big day.

Other athletes also commented, with some calling him of course, the G.O.A.T.

If you live in the DMV you've probably seen more than a few license plates with some sort of Ovechkin reference.  "GR8 8" comes to mind.  "OVIEE" being another. Will Ovechkin's latest record spawn even more license plates honoring hockey's #1?

With Gresky's record smashed, the only remaining question is... can Ovechkin reach 1,000 goals before he retires?

Another question I'll ask is, were you there? If so, what was the experience like? Leave a comment and share what that moment was like for you on this special day in hockey sports history.
