As we mentioned previously, there is just no end to the happiness quotient of one Theodore 'Ted' Leonsis.
After word that the NBA approved the sale of the Washington Wizards, Leonsis, in a press conference earlier today announced that he and his mega business partners have officially completed the transaction that includes the Wizards, the local Ticketmaster franchise, Kettler Capitals Iceplex, the Capitals' Arlington training facility, George Mason University's Patriot Center, and Verizon Center.
The mega partners boast the likes of Washington Capitals' Vice Chair and COO, Dick Patrick; Raul Fernandez (ObjectVideo), Dr. Sheila Johnson, Vice Chairman of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, founder of AOL International, Jack Davies; and Captial One's Richard Fairbank.
MSE becomes one of the largest sports and entertainment companies in the country.
With his powers combined, Leonsis is envisioning a DC sports environment that he says will "the best in class". "We're making the Verizon Center the cleanest, safest, most valued place in the country." Adding, he wants the Center to be "the most important arena in the country."
He already has some of the best athletes in the country that include players on the Mystics, and the Capitals. What he doesn't have are championships.
"I wanna win. Winning feels a lot better than losing" said the sports franchise owning mogul. Calling winning, "the ultimate deliverable."
To get the wins, he has to rebuild and upgrade the teams he loves so much - especially the Wizards.
Leonsis spoke candidly about the team's troubled guard, Gilbert Arenas, saying Arenas should be "re-embraced by as a player and a person."
Calling Gil his "biggest asset", Leonsis has a few items for his star player to work on before he rejoins the team this season.
"He has to get in shape, be a great teammate, be a pillar of the community, and show atonement."
Arenas, who Leonsis admits he "kinda likes" after speaking personally with him over the past weeks, was suspended for bringing guns to the locker room last season.
In a town that has much to offer sports fans of almost any sport, one thing we know, with Leonsis in charge, a change is going to come.
And the city - can't wait.
