Albert, Where Art Thou?

$21 Million Received. Where's The Package?

Have you ever paid for something and expected it to be delivered, and it wasn't?

That's what happened at Redskins Park today where one Albert Haynesworth was expected to appear for today's mini camp session.

Remember Where's Waldo and Where In the World Is Carmen Santiego? Add a new character to lineup.

Where's Albert Haynesworth?

Apparently, not at mini-camp, (make that mandatory mini-camp), and desperately wanting out of his contract with the Washington Redskins - even though he received a guaranteed payment of $21M just this April.

Product paid for. No delivery.

Oh, Albert, do give the media an opportunity to hear your side of the story so we may know why you have snubbed your teammates, the coaches, and the guy you told me you regarded so highly when you arrived here in Washington, Daniel Snyder.

Haynesworth may not be talking (at least not yet) to Daniel Snyder or coach Shanahan, but coach Shanahan had a few words to say today about Hayneswoth as he addressed the media.

Take a read.

On Albert Haynesworth not showing up to mini-camp :

“I will give you a little background. When I first talked with Albert [Haynesworth] back in February, and had a good feel how he felt, and sat down and talked with his agent, we let Albert know at that time that we would give him until April 1st to go to any team that he wanted in the National Football League, so if he wasn’t pleased in playing defensive end, nose tackle, or any other position that we had for him that we’d let him take a look at any team that he wanted to go to. But, on April 1st, where we owed him a check of 21 million dollars we said, ‘If you do take that check, we expect you to be the best defensive end, best nose tackle, if we play you at free safety, you’re expected to be the best free safety. Even though he’d have to lose a little weight.’ Whatever position we wanted to play him at that he would do the best job he possible could, and make a commitment that he was going to be the best football player. Obviously he took the check, so I was surprised he wasn’t here today because I thought he did make the commitment once he took that check that he wanted to be a Washington Redskin. He wanted to do the best thing for the Washington Redskins to help our defense, and to help our football team win. And obviously, he didn’t go in that direction. Quite disappointed with him.”

On if he indicated that he was willing to do whatever he was asked :

“Well, like I said, we talked to his agent to let the agent know that you got about a month and a half, a month, to talk to any team you want to. So those rumors circulating around the National Football League that we were in trade talks was really his agent talking to a number of football teams, and what teams may be interested in him, or what teams he was interested in joining, and obviously he decided to take our check, and very disappointed that he wasn’t here today.”

On where the team goes from here :

“Exactly where we started from. Albert hasn’t been here. He hasn’t been a part of this football team. We’ve been doing very, very well as a football team. Guys are working extremely hard, I’m not going to get into specifics of what our game plan is, but I’m trying to give everybody an idea, exactly what’ll materialize. I would have shared that with you today if Albert were here or not. So, am I disappointed he’s not here? Yes. Yes, I am because I thought once he did take that check he was going to make a commitment to be a Washington Redskin and do the best thing that he could possibly do to help our football team win.”

On if it is a manageable situation when Albert Haynesworth returns to the team :

“Well, like I said, I am not going to go down that direction. Obviously, we’ll make some decisions here shortly. I’m very disappointed because he did have the ability to go somewhere else and we asked for nothing in return except not paying him the remainder of his contract. He made $12 million his first year. We felt that if he didn’t want to be a part of us, that’s fine, if you want to go some place else that would be better for you and you want to play in that 4-3 scheme, but don’t take our check and the say, I don’t want to be a part of our organization and that’s what he did.”

On how important it is to set the right precedent in this situation :

“Well, I’m not going to go through our game plan but I think it’s pretty clear on how I feel and we’re going to do what’s in the best interest of this football team and this organization. I’m very happy about our football team where we’re at right now. We got a lot of leaders, a lot of guys working extremely hard. It’s really a shame that Albert has got so much attention for not showing up. Anytime you deal with that type of contract and the money that’s involved obviously we got to address these issues. I’ll tell you later a different part of our game plan as time goes on.”

On if they were planning on releasing Albert Haynesworth or trading him prior to the draft :

“When I said that we owed him a check of 21 million dollars, April 1st, in the middle of February, we let his agent know and Albert know that he could go to any team. We wanted nothing in return except we wouldn’t pay you that check on April 1st, but if you do accept the check we expect you to be a Washington Redskin and play at nose tackle, defensive end, linebacker, free safety. You are going to do the best job you possibly can to help us win. Obviously, he did not do that.”

On if he envisioned Albert Haynesworth playing defensive end or nose tackle :

“All our players play multiple positions. If you are a defensive end, you have to play nose tackle. You got to do what is best for our football team. I have no idea. Albert hasn’t been here. He has no idea what type of scheme we’re running. All he envisions is a typical nose tackle from what I read. To give you a little background, all of our defensive linemen play multiple positions.”

On how he feels about the defensive line without Albert Haynesworth :

"I feel very good about our football team in general. We're making strides every day. We've made a lot of improvements. We've had a great almost 20 workouts today would have been 20. I'm not sure if you could have called that a football day. The field was a little wet. We're were going to go but I was just afraid we'd have some injuries out there so we cancelled it and had a running practice as well as a weight lifting workout."

What Shanahan didn't mention was whether ownership was expecting a refund.
