Washington Athletes and Their Shiners (Black Eyes)

This past month in sports has been tough for Washington athletes.

On Monday night Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell, not only ended the game against the Giants with a giant loss, he was gifted with a black eye.

Another tough game for Campbell that barely saw any blocking from the defensive line left him to get fend for himself, leaving him to get sacked seven times.

But getting a black eye, too? C'mon D-Line! You've got to do better!

Campbell also hurt his shoulder. Says Campbell on his willingness to endure
“You always want to be a winner even when things aren’t going right. You still want to go out there to compete and if I can play, and I’m not hurt to the point where I can’t play, then I feel like I’m slacking on my teammates.”
Campbell talks with Comcast SportsNet about the game, and the eye, and more.

Mike Green Has A Black Eye Too!

Washington Capitals' defense man, Mike Green has worn his shiner a bit longer than Campbell, but the evidence is still there.

Green was hit from the rear during the Caps' 6-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche
on Dec. 14 by left wing David Koci.

In a sport where blows are common (and all too often, allowed) the shot to Greenie's eye is bringing attention to the long-time violence of the sport.

"Rubbing players out along the boards. Wearing guys down with hits. That's fine. But targeting heads and hitting to hurt like that, to me, it's not unlike the progression of obstruction", said Caps general manager George McPhee.

"It happens a little bit and it gets worse every day...are we excepting things, allowing things that 20 years ago we never would have allowed?"

The Caps won the contest 6-1, but the injury had even coach Bruce Boudreau wondering if the hit on Greene was an act of revenge.

"His shoulder hit Mike's head," explained Boudreau.

"It was a head shot in my mind all the way (and from behind to boot). A similar incident happened in October and the kid got banned for life. There's no way he [Koci] would have been on the ice if the score wasn't 5-0 at the time."

The Caps face the Sabres tonight at home. Game time, 7pm.
