A Commanding Name?

After much anticipation, a few leaks, and little on-air fanfare, Washington's football team has revealed its new name is Washington Commanders.

The franchise chose to reveal the news live on The Today Show on February 2, 2022, from FedEX Field with the team's former MVP quarterback Doug Williams, current Walter Peyton Man-of-the-Year nominee Jonathan Allen, and the team's first Black president, Jason Wright, who explained why the name is 'right' for the team.

'It's Something That We Can Own'

"It's a name that has the weight and meaning befitting a ninety-year-old franchise", said Wright. It's something that resonated with our fans, and it's something that we believe embodies the value of service and leadership that really defines the DMV community", he said.

Fans sound off on the name.

Fans have given mixed response after the name was leaked by one of its former players, Joe Theisman who hinted of the new name. Perhaps even more revealing than that was the fact that the team forgot that the FEDEX Field sky box has windows. News teams, on the hunt, showed video evidence of the team's name displayed on a huge banner. (Even construction teams cover windows during renovation.)

A FOX5 DC news poll shows that most people haven't yet warmed up to the team's new name, with only 13% indicating they're onboard.

When asked about fans who may not be as enthused about the new name, Williams replied, "With guys like Jonathan, and this football team, they're going to come to love the Commanders."

Like the new name, or not, loyal Washington fans have stuck by their beloved football team through loses, an embattled franchise, firings and hirings. Throughout it all, fans say they want just one thing more than anything else: WINS.

The team hasn't decided on a new mascot (nor if they will change WFT Daily) but claim just like with the team's new name, they may enlist the help of fans to help them decide a mascot. But today, says Wright, "This is just the launch of the brand."
