HU men's basketball fall to Notre Dame in MLK Classic

Howard University men’s basketball rallied Monday against Notre Dame in front of a full Burr Gymnasium crowd, but it was not enough to keep the home team from falling 71-68 in the MLK Classic.

Leading the scorers for Howard was sophomore forward Steve Settle, III (DeMatha High standout) with 25 points, 7 rebounds, in front of Fighting Irish's senior Nat Laszewski’s 17 points, 13 rebounds, 2 assists. Shooting guard Dane Goodwin also added 17 points toward the win.

Notre Dame led the charge in both halves, (31-30) first half and 40-38 in the final half, to improve 11-6 over the 6-8 Bison.

The contest was aired live on Fox Sports. The energy inside Burr Gymnasium was anything but chilly and the opposing team, it's first to an HBCU, left with an “exceptional” fan experience, per one Fighting Irish fan we spoke with.

Prior to the game Howard coach Kenneth Blakeney gave his team a lesson of perseverance as it pertained to Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and the Civil Rights movement.

Monday’s lost makes the second loss to Notre Dame in two years.

Howard’s spring semester begins today, January 18, 2022.
