The Redskins get another win; but then this happened.

It was the selfie seen around the world.

The Washington Redskins won last week against the Detroit Lions 19-16 at FEDEX Field.

Just last week interim coach Bill Callahan told the media that his team was “not on topof our game.

What a difference a week makes.

During the Redskins-Lions post game-winning presser Callahan sang a different tune, with good reason.

“The way they battled for four quarters. I’m really proud of our team and it’s really good to come out on the winning end of this. I couldn’t be more proud of the group of guys in that room. The struggles that we’ve gone through, to come out with a win today, that was huge.”

Yes, that WAS HUGE! We don’t need to point out that the Lions season hasn’t gone all that great either, so let’s stick to what’s important here: The previously 1-9 team finally getting another win.

“… that was a good win for our team today. I’m really proud of the way our guys fought, how the resilience held up, held in there, and just their overall grit, Callahan said.

Haskins, Jr takes selfie with fans.

But then this happened.

In the last two weeks, two DC sports teams won games that were overshadowed by on-the-field, and on-the-rink events. The Washington Caps won, but the fight that ensued in the last :09 seconds of the game, made more headlines.

Last week Dwayne Haskins, realizing he had his first home win as quarterback, excitedly went to a few just-as-excited-fans and decided to take a few selfies with them.

The team had just capitalized on a Quinton Dunbar interception that got the team set up for the game-winning field goal opportunity.

With the win secured, coaches and team members were suddenly thrusted  into a ‘Where’s Waldo?’ moment when their star-of-the-moment QB went missing – during the final snap of the game.

“We were looking for him, too, Callahan said.   “I think he thought the game was over.”

Youthful exuberance.

As you might imagine, the coach would have a few more things to say about the incident.

“I think that it’s an experience he’ll learn from as he matures and understands it’s a 60-minute game. It’s never over until it’s over. I think he was caught up in the emotion of the game itself – youthful exuberance, I would call it. I think it got away from him a little bit, but I think he’s fully aware that professionally his mind should be on the game throughout the duration of 60 minutes.”

But the media isn’t as forgiving and cites issue with not just the selfie-taking quarterback, but with the team's clock management as well.

“Can we talk about what was worse than that?, asked an ESPN Get Up! commentator on Monday’s show.

“It was the way they managed the clock. They had :26 seconds on first down, they kick the game-winning field goal and there’s :46 seconds left, and the team had three time outs. So, I don’t know which was worse, the way they handled the clock, or this kid taking a selfie.”

Interim coach Callahan claimed ownership of the clock issue in Monday’s media presser.

“I just felt that I could’ve done a better job just bringing the clock down a little bit more and then taking the timeout a little bit later than what we did”, he said.

“I just thought it was a little premature in terms of banging the timeout. I felt good about the field position we were at. Just left a little bit too much time on the clock for our defense to handle.”

Those ESPN people, finally cutting Haskins some slack (and thinking that they are the celebration police) stated, “Let’s not crucify the kid for having an in-the-moment reaction like a child and choosing the wrong type of celebration…., it’s his first NFL win.

And what did the youthful Haskins, himself, have to say about all this?

“I thought the game was over. I’ll get it next time”, he said.

Pointing it out anyway.

In the end, it was another much-needed win for the Redskins and another dismal loss for the Lions.

Said Lions’ linebacker Jarred Davis of his opponents, They came out, fought hard and out executed us in the end and that is what it came down to. They didn’t show us anything new, it came down to how they executed their play calls."

"It is a tough pill to swallow", he said.

The Redskins play Carolina this Sunday, December 1st on the Panthers’ home turf.
