Some of the brightest in the sports industry will be awarded at this year's Greater Washington Urban League annual gala, an event that recognizes the work of Mr. Whitney M. Young, Jr., a pioneer in the effort to secure education and foster community service.
One of this year's honorees include Washington Capitals, right wing Joel Ward. Ward will receive the GWUL's Pioneer Award. If you recall Ward helped the Caps advance to the conference semifinals with his game-winning goal in the first round of the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs against the defending Boston Bruins.
Other award recipients include Catana Sparks, Ph.D., the first female head coach of an NCAA Division I men's golf team. Sparks was the inspiration for the movie "From The Rough" which starred Howard University grad and Hollywood actor Taraji P. Henson.
Sparks joins Katie Ledecky US Olympic Gold Medalist, who broke the record in the 1650-yard freestyle, by nine seconds, at the 2013 AT&T Winter Nationals.
The GWUL will also award ten scholarships to local high school seniors.
George H. Lambert, Jr., the newly appointed President and CEO of the Greater Washington Urban League, Inc. states, “With all that we have happening the evening of the gala, I am most proud of the scholarship opportunities we have been able to afford to the ten high school students from around the Greater Washington area.”
Mr. Lambert, Jr. is the father of WPGC radio's resident morning drive time a.m. co-host, (and host of numerous events in Washington, DC), Guy Lambert.
