PSA: Combating Summer Reading Loss and Childhood Obesity

United We Serve: Let’s Read. Let’s Move. calls on all Americans to participate in combating summer reading loss and childhood obesity through volunteering and service this summer.

Let’s Read. Let’s Move. focuses on some of the most important issues that face our nation’s children today including summer learning loss that contributes to low academic achievement, childhood obesity and summer hunger.

We can make a difference when it comes to maintaining or improving students’ academic achievement.

Children who are not engaged in learning between school years suffer from “summer learning loss.” Reading just five books during the summer can make all the difference for many children and we can help make sure these students are encouraged to read.

Childhood obesity is another issue that faces many of our youth.  Having access to welcoming play spaces or other activities that get them up and moving is both a fun way to spend the summer and a way to increase health.  The CNCS Let’s Read. Let’s Move. initiative is proud to support First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! call to get children moving and exercising all year.
