HOWARD ANNOUNCES ADDITIONS TO COACHING STAFF

The Howard University football program announces new additions to the coaching staff for the upcoming season.

Brad Bernard has been named the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Bernard comes to the Hilltop after serving as offensive coordinator for Bethune-Cookman (B-CU) for the past 12 seasons. During his tenure there, the Wildcats ranked among the best in offensive productivity, winning the MEAC regular season title in 2002 and appearing in NCAA playoff berths in 2002 and 2003.

Bernard played at national powerhouse Georgia Southern, where he started 45 games and was a member of national championship teams.

Raymond Gross has been named the wide receivers coach. Gross also comes to Howard from B-CU where he served two stints as quarterback coach, first from 1999 to 2002, and then from 2005 to 2009. He also served as offensive coordinator at Clark Atlanta from 2001 to 2004.

Gross was a standout at Georgia Southern where he earned all-American honors while leading his team to back-to-back, 1-AA national championships in 1989 and 1990. Under his leadership at quarterback, GSU finished 15-0 record. Gross is an inductee in the Georgia Southern Hall of Fame.

Kenny Ray has been named offensive line coach. Ray comes to the Bison after serving as OL coach at Alabama State. He also served as assistant head coach and OL coach at North Carolina A&T.

Ray played collegiately at Southern Mississippi from 1992 to 1995. He graduated from USM with a degree in business administration.

Martez Edwards will handle the inside line backing duties and special teams coordinator. Edwards comes to Howard from Jackson State where he served as a graduate assistant on defense from 2008 to 2009. Edwards also served as defensive coordinator at his alma mater, Cass Tech in 2005 and as linebacker coach and defensive coordinator at Crockett High School from 2005 to 2007.

Edwards played collegiately at Lane College where he earned first team all-SIAC honors and all-American honors in 2002. He was team captain for three years.
