Following a 5-0 league season and a nine-win match streak, two Howard tennis players were awarded major postseason honors by the conference Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore Michelle Brown (Los Angeles, Calif./Georgetown) was named the MEAC Player of the Year while freshman Brittney Morgan (Beverly Hills, Calif./Beverly Hills H.S.) garnered MEAC Rookie of the Year honors. Additionally, Howard coach Larry Strickland was named MEAC Coach of the Year. All awards were voted on by the conference's head coaches and sports information directors.
Brown, a 2010 All-MEAC First-Team selection, tallied a 14-2 record at the number one and two singles positions. She recorded an unblemished 5-0 mark in northern divisional play and 9-6 mark (4-0 MEAC) in doubles competition. Brown was named MEAC Athlete of the Week five times this season.
Morgan was unbeaten in the northern division with a 4-0 mark. The All-MEAC First-Team selection tallied a 13-2 overall record primarily at the number two singles position. In doubles action, she recorded a 7-8 mark including a 2-2 record in northern divisional action. Morgan was named MEAC Rookie of the Week six times this season.
In 24 years at the helm of the Howard women’s tennis program, Strickland has guided the Lady Bison to four MEAC tennis titles and earned several league Outstanding Coach accolades. This season under his tutelage, Howard won its first divisional title with a 5-0 sweep of their northern counterparts and concluded the regular season with a 13-3 mark.
The 2009-10 season marked another milestone for the Lady Bison. Howard, who has not lost a match since March 19, defeated the DC area schools (Georgetown, George Washington and George Mason) for the first time in 25 years.
Howard hosts No. 4 North Carolina A&T in the opening round of the MEAC Championship on Friday, April 16. First serve at the Millbrook Tennis Center (Raleigh, N.C.) is slated for 8:30 a.m.
