Skins Get A Win!
It's a beautiful thing. That's how to sum up Washington's 34-13 win over the Oakland Raiders.
The team took control early, scoring 7 points in the first quarter, and never relinquished it.
"We got back to the basics", said secondary coach, Jerry Gray.
The Skins had 322 total yards, 222 passing courtesy of QB, Jason Campbell. They also had 21 first down plays and many play makers on the afternoon.
Rookie Brian Orakpo had four sacks in the contest, while NFL Man of the Year, London Fletcher added nine. Quinton Ganter, a native of Richmond, California earned praise for his two touchdowns and 50 yards off 14 carries. Ganter got his first start of the season against his hometown crowd.
With several players hit with the injury bug: DeAngelo Hall (knee), Albert Haynesworth (ankle), Mike Sellers (thigh), Phillip Daniels (knee), Cornelius Griffin (knee), Clinton Portis (IR/concussion), Chris Cooley (IR) the remaining players have stepped up to the plate and performed well.
"It's been a long time comin'... I can't tell you how excited I am for our players", said coach Zorn.
Fred Davis had two TDs, his first from 17 yards out; and another from 6 yards later in the game.
One rather high profile missed opportunity in the game came from Andre Carter's missed fumble recovery on the Raider three yard line in the fourth quarter that could have given the team a 41-13 win.
"His hands were like salad tongs", explained Zorn as he talked about Carter's inability to hold on to the ball.
New kicker Graham Gano performed well, kicking two field goals for the team, one at 46 yards out. Gano replaced kicker Shawn Suisham after two pivotal and costly misses (in the last two weeks) that could have sealed wins against the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints.
The Skins have three games remaining on the '09 season: New York (12/21), Dallas (12/27), and San Diego (1/3).
With tonight's win, the newly assembled Washington Redskins can at least hold their heads up high, and the fans have something to smile about, at least for this week.
