All Female Fight Delivers Hard Knocks

Headlines Daughter of 8-Time World Champion

Laura Fisher vs Kieona Barnes (pink)Over twenty young ladies participated in an amateur all-female boxing event last evening at Rosecroft Raceway, promoted by boxing matchmaker, Wanda 'Fight Lady' Bruce.

Presented by 'Women In Support Together', the event encourages and inspires young women to realize their full potential and to pursue their careers in professional boxing. Deemed the 'Road To London', it is also preparing a few of the boxers for spots in the 2012 Olympics.

The evening featured 13 three-round matches headlined by the daughter of eight-time world champion, Ann Wolfe.

We caught up to both mom and daughter for this exclusive DC UrbanSports interview.

Ann Wolfe on what is it's like having her daughter in the boxing industry.

"I tell both of my daughters that if they want to box they have to box under their own names, and not mine. I'm way harder on my kids, because I don't want them to be like Laila Ali who lived off her father's name. I want my kids to live off their own name."

Wolf's daughter, Jennifer, is an amateur fighter ranked number two in the nation.

On what it's like for Jennifer to be the main event in Saturday's fight.

"Knowing that you're the main event means who got a lot on your plate. It builds character as a boxer and an athlete."

On her daughter one day becoming a professional boxer.

"Jennifer can move up the boxing ranks, but she must first go to college. She'll be going to college and she'll be boxing".

Jennifer on preparing for the 2012 Olympics.

"I started out at 160, then went down to 145, and then to 141. I found out that they weren't taking any girls weighing 141 for the Olympics, so I have to go down to 132."

On the hardest thing about being a female boxer.

"To not get bored. Most girls have 50 or 60 fights, but I have had only twelve because no one is there, or no one wants to fight, so I get bored."

On what makes a good boxer.

"Heart."

Jennifer performed with heart going into her bout, as she defeated Maryland opponent, Shardae Powell, to improve her record, 11-2.

Other fights on the evening saw Tracy Redd defeating Kendall Rice. (Redd won the 'Knock Out of the Night" award for her effort).

Melissa Reams won a decision over Harrisburg, PA's Jonisha Wright. The bout was stopped 1:32 of round three.

Tori Nelson (DC) won over Tara Wood 1:58 of round two.

Jonisha Wright of Harrisburg won over Richmond, VA's Melissa Reams.

Talanee Tillery won by decision over Maddie Marshall of Woodbridge, VA.

The next all-female amateur event is scheduled for October 24, also at Rosecroft Raceway.

The August 15th event also honored US Military Brig. Gen. Julia Cleckley (Ret).
