Serena Williams A Crowd Pleaser
The Washington Kastles are on a roll as they pull out win number five on the season to defeat the Newport Beach Breakers last evening at Kastles Stadium in downtown DC.
Starting off the evening with the Men's Singles, the Kastles defeated the Breakers behind the power plays of Scott Oudesma and Leander Paes who went down the wire in a tie breaking, 5-4 win.
Mixed doubles action saw Leander Paes and Serena Williams easily winning over the Breakers, 4-1.
At the half, the home team advanced to take a 12 to 9 lead.
Williams battled, and won, a hard fought match against Canadian, Marie-Eve Pelletier in Women's Singles, 5-2.
With tonight's 22-12 win, the Kastles (5-4) are now in playoff contention in the Eastern conference.
"It's a true honor to coach a team led by Serena Williams, one of the greatest tennis players ever", said Kastles coach, Murphy Jensen.
Serena, who met with the media before the game, said she paid a visit to the White House yesterday where the President commented on her five-inch Fendi heels.
"Should you be wearing those?", asked the President, concerned that the high heels would somehow affect her tennis game.
With Serena contributing to the Kastles win, and having won Wimbledon, we know that her Fendi shoes hasn't affected her game at all. At least not for the moment.
Williams also mentioned that she thought First Lady Michelle was quite entertaining. "She had us cracking up and laughing". "I didn't know she had such an amazing personality."
On the other members of the Obama household: "The kids are cute, and sweet, and the dog (Bo) is nice", said Williams.
Catch the Kastles fever this Thursday night as they take on John McEnroe and the NY Sportime.
Seen at the match: Billie Jean King (co-founder of WTT), BET's Debra Lee; Redskins QB Jason Taylor; Cora Masters-Barry, and DC Councilman Kwame Brown (who caught a Kastles' tennis ball that landed in the crowd), Michelle Fenty (wife of Mayor Fenty), with sons Andrew and Matthew.
The half-time performance was given by the youth of Urban Hip Hop Nation, a choir and dance troupe founded by Mystics' managing partner, Dr. Sheila Johnson.
Meet Chad Price!
World Team Tennis and the Washington Kastles are all about preparing the next generation of world class tennis players, and thirteen year-old Chad Price is no exception.
We spotted Chad at the Kastles game last night with his autographed photos of almost every member of the Kastles and New Port Beach Breakers tennis teams.
His only missed autograph?
That of New Port Beach coach, Trevor Kronneman.
"I'll get him after the autograph session is over", said Price, as he waited for the long line of kids, sixteen and under, to get their chance at having their favorite tennis item signed.
Price already ranked #1 in USTA tennis in the country for his age/class, is a practicing Tae Kwon-Do martial artist, and attends school with The First Children, Sasha and Malia Obama at Sidwell Friends.
"What's it like going to school with the Obama girls?", we asked.
"It's too much security", said Price.
The eighth grader tells us his favorite subject is Social Studies and he plans to snag a tennis scholarship one day to either USC, Harvard, Howard, or Miami.
"What's your GPA?", we asked Chad.
"It's a work in progress said his father", Dr. Steven Price.
We're sure Chad does just fine with his studies. Keep up the good work, young man! We'll see you at Wimbledon!
