Team featuring U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan in division championship

More than 60 teams converged upon the RFK Stadium grounds Saturday for the first day of the Hoop It Up tour’s Washington, D.C. stop. Together, the DC Sports and Entertainment Commission and Best Experiential Properties brought Hoop It Up, the largest 3on3 basketball tournament in the world, back to D.C.

The team lead by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, named Slow and Steady, is one of the top two seeded teams heading into Sunday’s play.

Tournament players were not the only ones to show off on the court today. The Slam Dunk contest, which was open to all tournament players and the general public, also took place during the afternoon. Erik Moses, CEO of the DC Sports and Entertainment Commission, served as one of three judges for the contest. Kenny Dobbs, winner of the Chicago Hoop It Up slam dunk contest, also won the D.C. slam dunk title after earning a perfect score of 30 and a standing ovation on his final dunk.

Competition resumes tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the finals of each division being played at either 1 or 1:30 p.m. in Lot 8 of RFK Stadium. All competitions are open to the general public. Award ceremonies and presentations will take place following the completion of each division’s championship game.

The top four teams in each division automatically qualify for the World Championship tournament July 25-26 in Louisville, KY.
