The "Check Mate Poverty" Father's Day Event and Health Fair is being held at the Thurgood Marshall Center located at 1816 12th Street, NW Washington, DC from 10:00am until 4:00pm, on June 27, 2009.
There will be chess lessons for non chess players, beginner and advanced chess players. There will also be a chess exhibition featuring Chess Master Charles Covington. He is the first African American Chess Master from Baltimore, MD. He is a professor at Howard University, an author, magician and musician. He will play up to twenty people at a time.
In addition to the chess activities, there will be a health fair. Attendees will be able to play chess and get a check up. Hypertension, Diabetes, Sickle Cell, Prostate and HIV/AIDS screenings will be available.
Check Mate is when the King cannot make any more moves. Poverty is a form of check mate. We have five areas of focus to reduce poverty: Family, Education, Economics, Ethics and Health. Chess is an ideal tool we use to teach financial education.
Anyone interested in attending the event, participating in the exhibition, becoming a sponsor/supporter, volunteer, and/or chess coach, contact the event's host, Cheryl Richardson, or Derrick Carter, co-Host @ 202-332-6011/202-265-2375 vm or via email at businessease@aol.com.
