Wayman Tisdale Loses Battle With Cancer

Former Athlete, Bassist Dies At 44

Wayman Lawrence Tisdale, the former NBA basketball player turned bassist, passed today, a spokesman said.

Tisdale, who had been battling cancer, and as we told you late last year, had an operation to remove one leg in hopes of ridding the disease.

I remember when Wayman bought his soulful sound to our area about nine or ten years ago, performing live at Fair Oaks Mall. Talk about a bass player. A friend of mine (another bassist) recalled Tisdale being the inspiration for his playing the Kool and The Gang song, Get Down on It. Tisdale lent his own flavor to the song and made it his own. He was also known for collaborating with some of smooth Jazz's prolific artists like Jonathan Butler and Dave Koz.

Tisdale founded the Wayman Tisdale Foundation for other victims of cancer.

He will be missed, but his music lives on.

Our condolences to his wife, and four children.
