General Manager Angela Taylor announced the team has released guard Coco Miller. A graduate of the University of Georgia, Miller was selected by the Washington Mystics in the first round (9th overall) in the 2001 WNBA draft.
“Coco has been a tremendous asset to the Washington Mystics organization over the past eight seasons. It was with great difficulty that we decided to waive her. As we finalize our training camp roster, we are very confident in our depth at the guard/wing position therefore it is necessary to assess players at other positions,” said Taylor.
In 2002, Miller was named the league’s most improved player after averaging 9.3 points per game, 3.6 rebounds per game and 2.6 assists per game. She has spent her entire WNBA career with the Mystics and has averaged 6.3 points per game and 2.4 rebounds per game in the last eight years.
"I really enjoyed my years in Washington playing in front of the best fans in the WNBA. I'm going to miss the city and my teammates," said Miller.
The Washington Mystics will tip off the 2009 season on Saturday, June 6, on the road against the Connecticut Sun. Washington will host the club’s home opener on Sunday, June 7, against the Atlanta Dream.
The Mystics picked up University of Maryland stand out, Marissa Coleman, and also resigned former Mystic, Chasity Melvin. (Read our 2007 interview with Melvin here.)
Let's wish Coco well. This decision is a bit puzzling as Miller was signed for 2 more years, just last year.
Miller is the twin sister of Minnesota Lynx, Kelly Miller. Could a trip to Minnesota have us seeing double this season?
