The Howard University women's tennis squad recently held a breast cancer awareness night in conjunction with its matchup against Mount St. Mary’s on Feb. 21. The event was a success and over 50 people showed up to support the cause. The Prince George’s Tennis and Education Foundation (PGTEF), a youth tennis foundation and the Active Aces, a senior tennis organization, were all in attendance.
The Lady Bison auctioned off tennis paraphernalia including a folding chair donated by PGTEF and pink wrist bands. All matches used pink tennis balls from Wilson Sporting Goods with a portion of the proceeds donated to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Match winners autographed the signature balls and gave them to children in attendance.
“This was a wonderful event and 50-75 people came out,” said head coach Larry Strickland. “I’d like to thank everyone for their support and promotion of the event including Myron Davis, Watkins tennis bubble facility manager; Brenda Gilmore, Executive Director of PGTEF; Phil Hammond, head coach of Mount St. Mary’s; Nic Askew, HU assistant coach and Whitney Ubaike, team manager.”
The Bison wrapped up the evening with a 4-3 win over The Mount.
