In last evening's pre-holiday boxing event put on by Babie Girl Productions at Howard University's Burr Gymnasium (aka 'The Burr'), Albanian fans were treated to several rounds of professional boxing, DC Style.
Let me just say that this production did not disappoint. I would have loved for it to have started a bit closer to its original start time, but while I was there I thoroughly enjoyed each bout.
Here's how it went down.
Samir vs Armstead. Bastie Samir , of Las Vegas, NV floored Columbus, Ohio’s William Armstead, (now 2-9-0) three times before the ref called the fight.
This was definitely a case of wash, rinse, repeat. (Jab, jab, punch; fall to the canvas; repeat).
The seemingly frustrated Armstead yelled out an expletive as he hit the canvas the final time. Bastie, (originally from Ghana), now 2-0-0, won the contest in just 1:02 minutes in the first round.
Felton vs McRae. Stafford, Virginia’s Jonathan Felton entered the gymnasium carrying a baseball bat and marching to the beat of Jamaican singer Buju Bantan's, Driver A.
Nice entrance that got the crowd up and rockin' a bit, but it did nothing to help Felton in the ring.
Giving dap to the fight girls as he walked by, Felton would later have more action outside the ring than inside the ring.
Felton was called for shoving his Laurel, MD opponent, Dwayne McRae (3-0-0). McRae responded by landing several crushing blows to Felton’s midsection, and the fight was called in the first round by Felton’s corner.
To Felton’s dismay, he angrily protested his trainer’s decision and over turned a chair as he began exiting the gym. He later stepped up on the side of the basketball support stand before fight officials, university police, and members of this team subdued him and forced him out of the gym. (This isn’t the first time this behavior has befallen the 6-14-0 fighter).
Let’s hope he can channel this frustration into the training room to work on areas that can help him athletically, and mentally, win his next fight.
Horace ‘The Reason’ Grant vs Mike Miller. Here’s more proof that you should never judge a book by its cover.
At first glance, Kevin Hood (who replace Akron Ohio’s, Mike Miller) looked out manned against the tall and much heavier heavyweight, Horace ‘The Reason’ Grant.
But as the fight went on, Hood held his own. He matched Grant in both skill and stamina, at least in the first three rounds. The fight was eventually called in the third round as Horace received a TKO decision.
William Prieto vs Wayne Cooper. Perhaps the weirdest fight of the night. Evansville Indiana’s Wayne ‘Ezzard’ Cooper (8-1-1, 5 KOs) repeatedly (I said repeatedly) 'violated' his opponent, William Prieto (5-3-0, 2 KOs), out of Lorain, Ohio.
This eight round bout saw Ezzard bending his opponent over backward against the ropes (how Prieto recovered from that is beyond me).
Additionally, Prieto hit the canvas so many times it was hard to tell if he fell on his own from being tired, or if Ezzard helped him find his way to the canvas by pushing him.
Whatever the case, no points were taken for the bizarre incidents that occurred, and the fight continued.
Both fighters fought through to the end - trading blows, and showing superior stamina only to have the fight end in an eight round draw.
The main event featured Albania's Kreshnick Qato (17-6-0 – 2 KOs) versus Chicago, Illinois' David Estrada.
Qato remains the champ by defeating Estrada 2:18 in the sixth round.
Pics from the event (excluding the main event, as I had to leave before it started) can be seen here.

Howard Ladies Fall To George Mason
Howard shot just 30% (16-of-53) from the field in a 64-42 loss to George Mason Sunday afternoon in Burr Gymnasium. Tamaya Daniels had a team-high 13 points for the Bison and Zykia Brown added 12 in the loss.
GMU made 6-of-22 from the field while HU went 6-of-25. Mason stepped it up in the second half, however, and shot a blistering 63% (15-of-24) while the Bison continued to struggle from the field.
"Our shots weren't falling today", said Howard coach Niki Reid Geckeler. "We had many opportunities to put the ball in the basket but we just weren't able to finish."
Rashauna Hobbs finished with a game-high 18 points for Mason, who picked up its first win of the season. Eugenia Broadus added a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds while Brittany Eley chipped in 10 points.
For the Bison, freshman Natalie Day contributed six points and three rebounds off the bench. Brown, Daniels and Lonice Kenley dished out two assists apiece.
Howard (0-9) returns to action on Dec. 29 with a road matchup against Monmouth.
Game time against 7pm.
