Howard University Women's Basketball Schedule Announced


In her fifth season at the helm of the Howard University women's basketball team, head coach Niki Reid Geckeler announces the 2012-13 basketball schedule.

This season, the Lady Bison will welcome 12 teams to Burr Gymnasium on the Howard University campus, while venturing to 16 Division I institutions. Of the 28 contests, HU will face 12 non-conference opponents, along with facing 15 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foes.

"We are very excited about the upcoming season and the challenge ahead," said head women's basketball coach Niki Reid Geckeler. "We have a very competitive national schedule and hope to get better each game as we prepare for MEAC play."

HU kicks off the season with four consecutive road games, beginning with a two-game swing in Pennsylvania. On Friday, Nov. 9 the Lady Bison will take on Saint Francis (Pa.) at 7:00 p.m. in Loretta Pa., then on to the Nittany Lions of Penn State on Sunday, Nov. 11 in State College, Pa. The Lady Bison will then head to the "Windy City" for two days of hardwood hardwood action against DePaul on Saturday, Nov. 17 and Northwestern on Monday, Nov. 19.

The Lady Bison open at home on Friday, Nov. 23, as they welcome Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association member Bowie State to Burr Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m. On Sunday, Nov. 25 HU hosts Mount Saint Mary's at 7:00 p.m., followed by hosting Loyola (Md.) on Wednesday, Nov. 28.

The first MEAC competition of the season takes place in Dover, Del., against Delaware State at 7:00 p.m.

On Saturday, Dec. 15 HU takes on cross-town foe George Washington in Washington, D.C. The next two contests of the season take place in California and Ohio. On Friday, Dec. 21 HU goes up against Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif., at 1:00 p.m., then the Lady Bison head to Columbus, Ohio on Sunday, Dec. 30 to play Ohio State at 2:00 p.m.

HU finally returns to Burr to host Temple on Friday, Jan. 4 at 7:00 p.m.

MEAC action returns with HU heading to Coppin State in Baltimore, Md., on Monday, Jan. 7 at 2:00 p.m.

On Saturday, Jan. 12 the mighty blue and white take on the reigning MEAC champions Hampton at 2:00 p.m. in Burr gym. During the 2011-12 campaign, the two HUs met in the MEAC championship contest, where Hampton defeated Howard 54-53 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Norfolk State visits Burr gym on Monday, Jan. 14 for 5:30 p.m. before HU goes on a four-game road stint. On Saturday, Jan. 19 Howard goes toe-to-toe with North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C., followed by a Monday, Jan. 21 contest against North Carolina Central.

HU continues its road action in Newark, N.J., to play NJIT on Thursday, Jan. 24 for the last non-conference game of the season.

On Monday, Jan. 28 Howard heads to Hampton for their second regular-season contest.

The next four games will take place in Washington, D.C., with Savannah State (Saturday, Feb. 2), South Carolina State (Monday, Feb. 4), Maryland Eastern Shore (Saturday, Feb. 9), and Morgan State (Monday, Feb. 11).

HU migrates south to go toe-to-toe with Florida A&M (Saturday, Feb. 16) and Bethune-Cookman (Monday, Feb. 18).

Howard welcomes Coppin State to Burr on Saturday, Feb. 23, the contest is slated for 2:00 p.m.

The final regular-season away game takes place on Monday, Feb. 25 against Maryland Eastern Shore, while the final regular-season home game is scheduled for Monday, March 2. During the final home, Coach G will honor her senior student-athletes.

On Tuesday, March 5 Howard ventures to Norfolk, Va., in its attempt to clutch the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title.
