Howard women’s basketball team held off Loyola (0-3) 44-36 for its second straight win of the season. With the victory, the team improves to 2-2 on the season. HU will take to the road for its next six contests, beginning on Tues. Nov. 23 when it faces Jacksonville. The game is slated for 7 p.m.
In the second 20 minutes, Howard led by as many as 13 points off a Saadia Doyle layup. Doyle scored 10 straight points for the Lady Bison in the beginning of
the second half.
The Greyhounds used a full court press to fuel its 9-4 run to trim the HU advantage and cut it to 38-31 at the 3:26 mark. Two more free-throws by Alyssa Sutherland at 2:41 brought Loyola to within four, 40-36, with just under three minutes left. Clutch free-throws by Cheyenne-Curley Payne down the stretch helped the HU hold off the Greyhounds.
“I was proud of the way my team stayed their course and supported each other down the stretch,” said head coach Niki Geckeler.
Doyle finished with 19 points and five rebounds in 38 minutes of action. Curley-Payne had 11 points and three boards. Kara Smith chipped in with seven points while pulling down five off the glass. Portia Deterville grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
As a team, Howard shot 31.4 percent (16-for-51) from the field, while holding
Loyola to just 23.4 percent (11-for-47).
The Lady Bison opened scoring with a three-pointer from Curley-Payne – her first of two for the half. Loyola responded with a basket of its own. Highlighted by a Doyle layup, HU went on a 13-3 run to take a 16-5 cushion with just under 12 minutes remaining in the half.
Howard was leading 20-8 at the 8:31 mark, but Loyola scored seven straight unanswered points to end the half, and to trim the Lady Bison lead to 24-15 heading into intermission.
For the game, the Greyhounds were paced by Nicole Krusen and Sheahin’s nine points. Sheahin also added a game-high six steals.
HU will play Jacksonville on Tues. Nov. 23 for the first of its six-game road swing. The Lady Bison will face tough opponents such as UConn and LSU in the upcoming week.
