Skins Release Larry Johnson

Johnson was replaced by Chad Simpson, a third-year running back. Simpson was cut by the Buffalo Bills at the end of the 2010 preseason. The difference? Simpson, who is being regarding as the more faster, stronger RB, has been known to make his mark on special teams. He'll wear #29 for the Redskins.

Yet another area the Skins are trying to improve.

Who knew that on Tuesday, during the Skin's media availability periond, Johnson would be giving his last interview as a Redskin?

Certainly, not coach Shanahan. In an interview this week Shanahan said, "“I really didn’t see that coming. I didn’t see that coming and I don’t think anyone saw that coming, especially when you are trying to get things going in the running game. With a running back at his caliber, the things he has been able to do and what we wanted to do here, I think he would kind of somehow work it so it would work out in our favor. I just didn’t see it and a decision was made.”

Shanahan said Johnson could come back to the roster if someone gets hurt.

"He gave us everything he had and heck, there’s still a chance that if somebody goes down that he could come back here.”

Certainly, the move came from the top of the Redskin organization.

“We appreciate Larry’s attitude and contributions to the Redskins,” Redskins Executive Vice President/General Manager Bruce Allen said. “However, we needed to make a roster move in preparation for this week’s game against the Rams.”

News Out of FedEx Field

FedExField, home of the Washington Redskins, announced today that it has added two more exciting college football games to its already unmatched slate. Brigham Young and West Virginia will play this Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016, and Maryland will host Texas on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018.

The BYU-WVU game will mark the first meeting between the schools’ football programs. Texas holds a 3-0 series advantage over Maryland. The last meeting between the programs was in the 1978 Sun Bowl.

Texas and BYU are two of only five programs nationally to win 10 or more games each of the past four seasons. From 2006 through 2009 BYU compiled a record of 43-9, while Texas has gone 45-8 over that same time span, including a National Championship Game berth this past January.

West Virginia has been one of the elite programs in the nation this decade, winning eight or more games for eight straight years, receiving AP Top 25 billing for the past five years, including three in the Top 10 finishes, and earning eight straight bowl trips. Maryland has been in a bowl game six of the last nine years.

FedExField will also host other high-profile college football games such as Penn State vs. Indiana on Nov. 20, 2010; Notre Dame vs. Maryland on Nov. 12, 2011; the 112th Army-Navy Game on Dec. 10, 2011; and Virginia Tech vs. Cincinnati in 2012.

Earlier this season FedExField hosted the nationally-televised game between No. 3 Boise State and No. 10 Virginia Tech that saw BSU win 33-30 in a come-from-behind effort.

Also, The Washington Redskins named Eric Wallich coach of Damascus High School in Damascus, MD the Redskins High School Coach of the Week for the week of September 20, 2010.

The Redskins High School Coach of the Week program is designed to recognize and reward excellence in high school football coaching.
