The Greater Washington Sports Alliance, along with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield are proud to announce that online registration has opened for the 2nd annual Anthem GREAT PUMPKIN 5k and Kids’ PUMPKIN DASH. Scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, the event is open to runners, walkers and participants of all fitness levels and ages. The race serves as a cornerstone activity within the popular Oktoberfest celebration hosted by the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce taking place at the Reston Town Center during the weekend.
“The Greater Washington Sports Alliance is proud to continue the tradition of connecting meaningful sporting events to the residents of our region,” said Sports Alliance President Robert Sweeney. “The Anthem GREAT Pumpkin 5k has rapidly become an annual tradition showcasing all that the Northern Virginia community has to offer, and this year’s event will certainly be one to look forward to.”
Race participants and their families will also have the unique experience of seeing The GREATEST PUMPKIN in the State of Virginia, which will be on display at the post-race Fall Festival. The festival will feature local restaurants, live entertainment, amusement rides, and more. All participants will also have the opportunity to take part in a Pumpkin Decorating Contest as well.

An estimated 3,000 runners, joggers and walkers are expected to take part in the event which offers both a timed and non-timed 5k as well as a free children’s Pumpkin Dash. Families and children attending are encouraged to get into the fall season by participating in one of the Anthem Great Pumpkin events.
Proceeds from the race will benefit research at Inova Heart and Vascular Institute. The cardiac and thoracic surgeons at Inova Heart and Vascular Institute provide world-class care using the most sophisticated technologies available, integrating healthcare services in a manner proven to enhance quality of care and clinical outcomes.
