Former Pitt Coach New Volleyball Coach at Howard

Dawn Barnes, formerly the Volunteer Assistant Coach at the University of Pittsburgh, has been named Head Volleyball Coach at Howard University.

In addition to one season at Pittsburgh, Barnes served as the Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for the highly-successful Williamson County Select Volleyball team (Nashville, Tenn.), which earned a Big South tournament championship during her tenure there.

In three seasons with Williamson County Select (2005-08), Barnes had 13 women go on to play collegiate volleyball. Four players have gone on to NCAA Division I teams, two to DII teams, four to DIII teams and three to NAIA teams. She also spent three seasons with the Impact Volleyball Club under USA Volleyball (USAV).

Barnes is also very active with the USA High Performance tryouts, developmental camps and clinics at various locations throughout the nation. Most recently she has been selected as the Assistant Coach to the Select Team at the USA HP Nationals in Wisconsin Dells in July.

Barnes earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Teikyo Marycrest University in 1993. She was a standout hitter for the Eagles, earning All-Conference and Regional honors. In addition, Barnes was invited to Colorado Springs, CO for the 1992 Summer Olympics tryouts.

“I am excited for the opportunity to be part of such a historic institution,” said Barnes. “The DC metro area has a great tradition of high school and Junior Olympic volleyball. When you combine that with the fan support the University’s sports teams have, it makes for a great opportunity to build something special here. I am looking forward to a new chapter for Howard volleyball and building off the tremendous history that Howard had back in the early 90s.”

“I’d like to thank Charles Gibbs, Athletic Director, Piper Malone, SWA and Dexter Harris, Associate Athletic Director for giving me this opportunity,” Barnes elaborated. “I would also like to thank Toby Rens, (Head Coach, University of Pittsburgh) for letting me serve as his Volunteer Assistant Coach. During the interview process it was apparent that Howard has a tremendous commitment to the student-athlete and I am proud to be a part of an institution with such a rich historical history.”

Barnes began her coaching career in 1993 at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. She then coached under Dr. Geri Polvino at Eastern Kentucky University and served as the Assistant Men’s and Women’s volleyball coach at Vassar College (Poughkeepsie, N.Y).

Barnes takes over a Howard program that returns six starters from last season's campaign.
