Lady Bison Victorious Over UMES

Neither snow or wind could stop the Howard Bison women's basketball team Saturday from getting a 'W'.

The Lady Bison won in a close game, 55-51, over Maryland Eastern Shore.

Saadia Doyle bested her career high with 32 points and posted her 13th double-double of the year as Howard (9-10, 5-3 MEAC) at the Hytche Athletic Center.

With the Bison up a pair on the scoreboard, Doyle and Zykia Brown combined to help Howard ink five of eight free-throw attempts with 2:36 remaining.

Two minutes elapsed on the scoreboard when HU led again by two and Doyle was fouled as she drove the ball up the court. With 15 seconds left, Doyle made one of two free-throws and UMES guard Casey Morton's 3-point attempt with seven seconds left bounced off the rim.

"Our girls really stayed tough at the end of the game and made some huge plays," said Bison head coach Niki Reid Geckeler. "The whole team stayed strong. I'm really, really happy for them."

Doyle finished 16-of-22 at the free-throw line, salvaging the Bison's 19-of-28 go of it at the line. Howard had a tough shooting night all around, finishing at only 30.8 percent from the field. After trailing by three points at halftime and allowing four blocks the opening stanza, the Bison limited UMES’ second-chance opportunities.

Doyle and Brown, who had 22 points, were the only players that finished with double-figure scoring totals for HU.

The Hawks, which dropped to 7-10 (4-3 MEAC) with the loss, were paced by Chelsea Sanders’ 17 points. April McBride posted 10 points and 10 rebounds and Adobi Agbasi added 10 boards.

Howard meets Delaware State at Memorial Hall on Monday, Feb. 1, at 5:30 p.m.
