Out At Redskins Park
In our new segment, 'Out At Redskins Park' we'll fill you in and keep you abreast of the latest news and info going on with the Washington Redskins organization - and there's aplenty.
Here's the latest...
Greg Blache Not Speaking To The Media?
Why can't Greg Blache talk to the media after practices, and after games?
The defensive coordinator who always has something colorful and offbeat to say after every Redskins game silenced for the rest of the 2009 season?
The defensive coordinator who gave us sound bites like, "This team played like the the south side of a northbound skunk."
The defensive coordinator who gave his thoughts on how his team's pass rushing fares to Comcast analyst, Trevor Matich, can no longer give interviews?
That's like Fred Flintstone not eating brontosaurus burgers. To quote NFL coach Mike Singletary, "You Just Can't Do It. Can't Do It."
Per League rules, "assistant coaches – through their public relations department, clubs must provide regular and reasonable access to assistant coaches for media interviews that serve the best interests of the club and league. This access will include the availability to media that regularly cover the club of the offensive and defensive coordinators at least every other week during the regular season for a minimum of 10-15 minutes, beginning with the week leading to Week 1 of the regular season. Coordinators and other primary position coaches must be available on a reasonable basis during training camp and throughout the season through the team public relations department."
and get this...
"Clubs may not put assistant coaches off limits to the media and may not unreasonably withhold permission for primary position coaches or coordinators to speak to the media."
So what's going on out at Redskins Park?
We'll keep following this one to bring you more.
In the mean time, expect to hear from Skins' Jerry Gray in Blache's stead.

The Redskins have hired longtime NFL assistant coach Sherman Lewis as an offensive consultant. Lewis, a 22-year NFL coaching veteran, brings a history of success and a vast knowledge of the West Coast Offense, in addition to four Super Bowl rings.
Executive Vice President of Football Operations Vinny Cerrato said of Lewis.
Lewis last served as offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions under Head Coach Steve Mariucci in 2004. Prior to going to Detroit in 2002 as a special offensive assistant, Lewis was the Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator for two seasons (2000-01). With Lewis directing the offense in 2000, the Vikings’ advanced to the NFC Championship Game with first-year starter Daunte Culpepper at quarterback. Culpepper was a Pro Bowl starter following the season after completing 297-of-494 passes for 3,937 yards and 33 touchdowns, for a passer rating of 98.0. In addition to a passing attack that featured Culpepper, Cris Carter and Randy Moss, Minnesota running back Robert Smith led the NFC in rushing in 2000 with 1,521 yards.
Lewis, canceling his plans to call a game of BINGO when he got the call from the Redskins said...
Back to Skins....
Coach Zorn appears to welcome the addition, and says, "Lewis won't be coaching", and further says....“We’re happy to have Sherm’s set of eyes and voice to help us as we continue to find ways to create success on offense.”
The Redskins have also signed punter Glenn Pakulak to their practice squad. To make room on the practice squad, Washington released wide receiver Trent Shelton.
Pakulak, 6-3 and 220 pounds, is a second-year punter out of Kentucky. He is 29 years old, and spent parts of 2009 preseason with the New Orleans Saints and New York Jets.
He saw his first NFL action with New Orleans in 2008, playing in eight games. He posted 24 punts for a 47.7-yard average and a 37.8-yard net average. He placed three punts inside the 20.

Executive Vice President of Football Operations Vinny Cerrato said of Lewis.
“Sherm Lewis is an outstanding coach who has been an instrumental member of four Super Bowl championship teams,” Redskins “Sherm’s history started with the innovator of the West Coast Offense, Bill Walsh, and over the past two decades he has directed some of the best offenses, and coached and developed some of the league’s premier players. He has a diverse NFL background, having coached running backs, wide receivers, and serving as a coordinator. Jim and Sherman share a common bond in that they both worked for Mike Holmgren at different times in their careers. Sherman’s overall experience and expertise will be a tremendous addition to our coaching staff. His track record humbles us all.”More on Lewis' career.

I am looking forward to working with Jim Zorn, Sherman Smith, Joe Bugel and the rest of the coaching staff”, said Lewis.Hey, there's nothing wrong with calling (just do it right), or playing, BINGO. (I play it myself - I'm not a senior citizien - and last week won a few bucks to help pay some bills).

Pink and Prayer Power Redskins To A Win!
What started out feeling like Murphy's Law unfolding in Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, ended up being a much needed boost for the Skins psyche, and a 19-16 win at FedExField.
Murphy's Law
What could go wrong, did go wrong.
Again, we had a game that wasn't pretty.
In the first half, punter Hunter Smith suffered a groin injury and did not return to the game.
Quarterback, Jason Campbell threw for three interceptions (all of them to the Bucs' Agqib Talib), got sacked, and had the ball stripped from his hands. His efforts were so bad that he even questioned his own performance.
"Today in the first half, I didn’t even know if I was at FedExField. It was the first time in my career I had ever had three picks, even pee wee, high school, college or pros. The first thing I was thinking about was, ‘why me, why is this happening?’
Wondering, too, were the fans. Even those in talk radio were skeptical about Campbell, and some wanted coach Jim Zorn to make a substitute - real quick - after the Bucs were leading 10-0.
But Zorn, believing in, and sticking by his quarterback said, "I never thought about replacing Jason."
The Comeback.
What turned things around for the Skins?
An interception by DeAngelo Hall lit a spark in the team - a spark that fueled a third quarter fire that saw the QB finding his rythmn, garnering praise from the head coach.
Believe. That word is prominently displayed on a plaque in the Redskins' lunch room, and is the word what helped the team and their 'General' find the rhythm that would eventually pay dividends.
Campbell credits taking chances.
Moss' reception in Sunday's game was the 18th of his career to cover at least 50 yards. (Thirteen of those receptions converting to touchdowns).
Running back Clinton Portis had a stellar day, rushing for 98 yards off 25 carries. With a six-yard run in the second quarter, Portis moved past Hall of Famer Earl Campbell (9,385) for 26th on the NFL’s all-time rushing list.
What Zorn Loves About His Team.
Despite the rocky first half start, Zorn points out the positives in the team's efforts.
Game Notes
Shaun Suisham’s first-quarter 31-yard punt in relief of the injured Hunter Smith, was the first of his career.
Redskins cornerback Justin Tryon’s second-quarter sack of Josh Johnson was the first of his NFL career.
In Support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month
GlaxoSmithKline and fraternity Zeta Tau Alpha (ZTA),partnered to recognize October's Breast Cancer Awareness Month. More than 45,000 pink breast cancer awareness ribbons were given out prior to the game. Players and coaches donned pink gear to include cleats, wristbands, gloves, sideline caps, helmet decals, captains’ patches, coaches caps, sideline and quarterback towels. Tanya Snyder, wife of Redskins owner Dan Synder is the national spokesperson for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Last week, Skins players Chris Cooley and Derrick Dockery, along with their wives and Tanya Snyder, hosted a luncheon at Redskins Park for several breast cancer survivors. The ladies were treated to makeup and wig consultations and were given a pair of Gap jeans, several free Redskins items to include jerseys, and tickets to Sunday's game.

An interception by DeAngelo Hall lit a spark in the team - a spark that fueled a third quarter fire that saw the QB finding his rythmn, garnering praise from the head coach.
"He kept standing strong. The thing that I kept telling Jason Campbell was, just get back in line. He's the General out there on the field."Even Campbell's teammates were in full support, telling him, "We believe in you."
Believe. That word is prominently displayed on a plaque in the Redskins' lunch room, and is the word what helped the team and their 'General' find the rhythm that would eventually pay dividends.
Campbell credits taking chances.
"... the second half I came out and I said, I need to take some chances. In the first half I was timid, I didn’t run. I wanted to stay in the pocket and throw. In the second half I said that if I was there, I’m running unless they take it away."Taking chances translated into Campbell throwing a TD pass to Chris Cooley at the start of the third quarter. (Cooley's 76th consecutive reception). Campbell later fired off a 59 yard TD pass to Santana Moss in the end zone for another Redskin touch down that would seal the win.
"Everyone maintained their poise. Our game plan was sound. We came back and really starting moving the ball. We had some heroic efforts. [Shaun] Suisham came in after Hunter pulled his groin , and did a great job. It was really a tremendous day for defense. Our defense shut them down. We played with passion on defense. [I'm] proud of Greg Blatche, and our defensive players. I can't wait to watch it [the video] on film. It was a great game."A game that ended with a win for a team who's season started out leaving a lot of people wondering about the future of the franchise, but showed, at least for today, a glimmer of hope and a ray of possibility.

Pampered and Pink At Redskins Park
Breast cancer survivors treated to a fun day of pampering, with a purpose, to headline October’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Twenty breast cancer survivors were selected by various local branches of the American Cancer Society for a day of fun, food, and fashion at Redskins Park this past Tuesday.
The ladies received gift bags filled with pink team jerseys, a football, free tickets to Sunday’s Skins vs. Tampa Bay game, a tour of the Redskins Ashburn facility, and a makeup demonstration complete with numerous makeup items courtesy of the American Cancer Society’s Look Good, Feel Better campaign.
Tracy Wilkins-Clark, a certified instructor of non-surgical hair replacement, was on hand to help the ladies chose a wig of their choice. Patients who opt for chemotherapy to treat breast cancer often lose their hair. The wigs are made from 100% human hair and add a new look to the ladies who chose to wear them.
Gap Apparel donated 20 pairs of their 1969 line of jeans to each of the ladies. The 1069 line is the newest line in the Gap collection.
The ladies were then treated to a luncheon with Redskin players Chris Cooley (and wife Christy), Derrick Dockery, and wife Emma.
On the menu: Spring salad, asparagus, Orzo, stuffed tomatoes with spinach, baked chicken, and Strawberry Blitz punch.
Breast cancer affects every 1 in 8 American women.
Chris Cooley’s mother, Nancy, was diagnosed with the disease last year. Teammate Derrick Dockery’s mother, Sheila, is a cancer survivor. Dockery’s wife, Emma, lost her mother to the disease, and Tanya Snyder, wife of Redskins owner Dan Snyder, was recently diagnosed with the disease a year ago. She offers these words of advice.
“Get tested early, as early detection saves lives.”

After noticing a lump in her own breast after a self examination, Snyder was quite vigilant with doctors who misdiagnosed her findings.
Synder, who recently became the national spokesperson for breast cancer awareness, tells us that she has had a complete lifestyle change. “I eat right, and exercise. I’m real big on nutrition these days. I limit my sugar intake because I know that sugar feeds cancer cells.”
Snyder, 47, who was treated at the Mayo Clinic, says whenever she has an urge for a sugary treat, she opts for grilled blueberries and apples for a sweet and tasty treat.
“The sugar is natural, and the fruit is delicious”, shared Snyder.
The Redskins will offer free mammograms before the start of Sunday’s Redskins vs Tampa Bay game tomorrow.
Players plan to wear pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month to include wearing pink cleats, wristbands, gloves, sideline caps, helmet decals, captains’ patches, sideline towels and quarterback towels.
