Lange Wins WBC Title - Opponent Announces Retirement!
On a night when so much was going on in the world of sports, the WBC Title bout between Jimmy Lange and Frank Houghtaling beat out the Kentucky Derby, HBO boxing between Manny Paquiao and Ricky Hatton, a couple of NBA Game 7s, and even the Washington Capitals, as Great Falls, VA fighter Jimmy Lange defeated New York's Frank Houghtaling in a hard hitting 5th round TKO, leaving the Houghtaling corner to call the fight. (Fight photos).
Lange on Houghtaling
“It was a good fight. I caught him pretty early. I was able to get to him in just about every round. He was pretty much in survival mode. I knew it was just a matter of wearing him down, trying to pour on as many shots as I could. He has a very good punch. Very talented fighter. I trained hard, but you know, I gotta be honest with you, I take my hat off to him.”
Lange On Training For The Fight
“I’ve completely changed my whole training camp, and style, in my new training camp. We trained for 6 weeks or so to jump on guys right in the beginning, and fight the whole time… to break a guy’s will, and that’s what I did. I started faster than I usually do, and that’s what Don stressed.”
(Trainer) Don Turner on Lange
“When I saw him I was surprised. I trained a lot of fighters, and this was probably the best camp that I’ve had. That’s including Holmes, Holyfield, all of them. This kid really wants to work, and I think he can go far. He works hard and doesn’t complain. He complains that we don’t do enough.”
Houghtaling Announces Retirement
“I said before the fight to my wife and kids, this is it for me. I’m going to be known as the “Punching Preacher. I’m going to school for my masters in Divinity. Now it’s time to go work for God instead of working in the ring.”
A New Record
Jimmy Lange (30-3-2, 21 KOs) over Frank “The Punching Preacher” Houghtaling (19-16-5, 4 KOs), in a 5th round TKO.
**Update** The win ranks Lange at #11 in the May 2009 North American Boxing Federation (NABF) Ratings. Lange can also expect to achieve a world ranking next month when the WBC ratings are announced.

Weights Announced for Jimmy Lange Bout!
Jimmy Lange, looking to secure his second WBC regional title, takes on New York's Frank Houghtaling this Saturday at the GM Patriot Center.Local fight match maker, JD Brown, talks about Jimmy Lange and this Saturday's card.
"It's going to be an exciting night of boxing for everyone involved. People are going to see a new and improved Jimmy Lange under the tuteledge of Don Turner. They'll see that Jimmy wasn't just a TV celebrity on The Contender, but he's actually a real good fighter who could be become world champion in the very near future. People are going to get their money's worth."Ring announcer, Henry 'Discombobulating' Jones weighs in on the event.
"Once again this is the franchise that Jimmy built. We're expecting a great crowd and certainly looking for all the fighters to be competent, and I'm going to pump them up as much as I can."
As far as this Saturday's Jimmy Lange championship bout goes, Jones said: "Jimmy realizes that window of opportunity is closing, so he not only has to win tomorrow night, but he's got to look impressive in doing so."
Weighing in at 152 pounds, Lange tells us,
"I don't need to talk about anything any more. I prove things by doing them. They're gonna see a focused, completely prepared (mentally, physically) well-oiled machine."Brown, who bought Houghtaling to DC a couple of year's ago in a fight against Sharmba Mitchell, when asked why the fight is on the same night as the Ricky Hatton vs. Manny Pacquiao fight said, "A lot of people are going to TiVO the Hatton fight. A lot of people are going to wait for it to come on HBO for free. So (in the mean time), they can come out and see an actual live bout; see actual blood, sweat and tears on May 2nd at the Patriot Center instead of sitting at home eating popcorn waiting for the fight on Pay-Per-View, or next week on HBO."
The May 2nd fight is being produced by Ice Promotions. Doors open at 6:00 pm.

I Earn My Rest!
Youth Fitness Zones Help Kids Combat Childhood Obesity.
Mini camp may have just begun for the '09 class of the Washington Redskins at Redskins Park, but a couple of Redskins held their own mini camp yesterday to help foster awareness among kids about childhood obesity.
Redskins Antwaan Randle-El and the recently re-signed, Renaldo Wynn, participated in a youth fitness mini camp at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater DC held at THE ARC (more).
At different workout stations, the kids participated in fun, healthy exercises such as martial arts, hopscotch, and more.
Childhood obesity is a growing problem among U.S. youths due to lack of exercise and improper eating habits*.
GlaxoSmithKline is a participating partner of the ForAHealthierAmerica campaign designed to help America live longer, better lives.
*Side note: Exercise and healthy eating habits are alive and well at TheArc as I noticed several kids participating in physical exercise and eating apples during the afterschool child care program.
