Long Island Blackbirds Edge Bison 71-66

Connie James scored the go-ahead basket with 1:03 to play and Long Island University (LIU) defeated Howard 71-66 at Burr Gymnasium on Saturday.

It was James’ last basket of the game and it proved to be the most pivotal as the Blackbirds held HU scoreless the rest of the game.

A lay-up by Kiara Evans with 23 seconds remaining pushed the LIU lead to three points at 69-66. Howard failed on an opportunity to tie the game on a missed 3-pointer, and the Blackbirds sealed the win when James converted a pair of free-throws with four seconds remaining.

The late baskets by James and Evans thwarted a Bison rally that saw them overcome a seven point first-half deficit.

LIU (1-3) jumped out to a 26-19 lead before Howard would rally.

The Lady Bison used back-to-back baskets from Saadia Doyle and a Tamoria Holmes jumper to take a four point lead at 41-37 with 16:37 left in the second half.

HU increased the lead to nine points before James and Heidi Mothershead helped trim the Bison lead to 62-61 with 2:48 to play.

Howard outscored LIU 20-4 in bench points and scored 24 points off of 16 Long Island turnovers.

Zykia Brown had a game-high 20 points and Doyle finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds, her second double-double of the season. HU dropped to 0-3 with the loss.

Holmes added 14 points for the Bison.

James paced LIU with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field.

Howard next hosts Jacksonville on Wednesday, Nov. 25. Game-time at Burr Gymnasium is slated for 3 p.m.
