Cybersquatting Hits Hometown Athletes

Remember when having a hot Internet domain name (especially if it belonged to someone else) meant cashing in big?

People would register names of companies, athletes, and celebs in hopes of the real person buying their name back from the person who registered it. This probably was the start of your favorite athlete or entertainer authenticating their web sites by using words like - 'The Official Website Of' . That way, fans would know they have reached an authentic site.

How happy for a lot of athletes, a few in our area included, to know that their names have been given back to them, courtesy of Toronto Raptor, Chris Bosh.

Bosh sued and recently won the rights to his name, and more than those of 800 other athletes.

Included in the 800 athletes named, are the Washington Wizards' Dominic McGuire, Caron Butler, and Andray Blatche. All have had their names registered, without their permission, and will rightfully regain the use of their names. (Source).

The Wizards are playing the Philadelphia 76ers at the time this article was published. I wonder if they've heard the good news.

**Update: Wizards win 90-89 over Philly 76ers and former Wiz coach Eddie Jordan. Mike James fouled with one second remaining. Hits two foul shots to win the game.**
