Mystics Choose Matee Ajavon

The Washington Mystics acquired guard Matee Ajavon with the second pick in yesterday's WNBA dispersal draft.

During her rookie season, the 5’8 Ajavon played in every game and averaged 8.0 points per game, 1.8 rebounds per contest and 1.7 assists per outing. She started two games for the team and averaged 9.0 points per game and 2 assists per game in those contests.

A standout point guard at Rutgers University, Ajavon completed her collegiate career with a 109-32 team record and helped her school to four NCAA tournament appearances and to the 2007 National Championship game against the University of Tennessee. In 2007, she was named to the Final Four All-Tournament Team and the Big East Tournament Most Outstanding Player. Ajavon also earned additional honors such as All-Big East First Team in 2006, Big East Freshman of the Year and All-Big East Freshman Team in 2005.

“Matee has the ability to have some very explosive offensive games and will eventually be a shut-down defender on the perimeter. Her competitive drive and intensity will be huge assets in our blue collar system", said Mystics GM Angela Taylor.

Ajavon was selected fifth overall by the Houston Comets in the 2008 WNBA Draft held in April.
