Giving Back To The Community: Caron Butler 3D Family Weekend

When I first got wind of this press release the first thing I immediately thought was 'this is how you give back to the community', and wouldn't it be great if all professional athletes cared enough to do the same.

This past weekend in Racine, WI former Wizard - now LA Clipper - Caron Butler took the time to host another episode of his 3D Charity event.

Butler donated $200,000 to four local charities:  the United Way of Racine County, the local Racine YMCA, The Bray Center, and the Racine Juneteenth Foundation.

But he didn't stop there.

Butler also hosted a discussion panel for teens, ages thirteen to sixteen, focusing on reality and social issues of their time.  The 'Teen Summit' was moderated by BET's Rosci, and MSNBC's moderator Jeff Johnson. Along with the Teen Summit, part of Butler's two-day 3D: Discipline, Determination and Dedication initiative, Butler also hosted a 'Get Active with Caron Butler' outdoor fitness activities event with an emphasis on health and wellness for children ages five to 15.

But the Caron Butler giving doesn't stop there.

Because it does 'take an entire village', Butler hosted a dinner for families participating in the Advancing Family Assets (AFA) program, a United Way of Racine County Community Initiative that assists low-wage working families as they work toward achieving better jobs, education and health.

The weekend culminated with a neighborhood community block party - for the entire community.

Butler is no stranger to giving back to his community.  During his time as a Washington Wizard in DC, Butler would have annual bike giveaways and a yearly 3D basketball camp teaching youth the fundamentals of basketball.

"I have always dreamed of this success and giving back," said Butler. "Coming here today, presenting this check means things are coming full circle. But you know, you have to be passionate and put your heart in it because it's not about the money. It's about inspiring people and especially the youth."

Butler also encouraged those in attendance to not only be successful, but to also give back.  "Be successful no matter the path you choose," he said. "Give back no matter what."

Kudos to Caron and his family for caring enough about the communities that care about them.
While the media always focuses on the negative things that professional athletes involve themselves in, we feel the positive actions of those like Caron Butler need to be highlighted as well, and we will continue to highlight them here on DC UrbanSports.

Hey, other pro athletes:  What did you do this off-season to make a difference?
