Telling reporters at a pregame interview she's excited to be back in DC playing for the Washington Kastles, Serena Williams proved that point quite well in an astounding Women's Singles game finale over the Boston Lobster's CoCo Vandeweghe.
Vandeweghe managed to open up a 3-1 lead over Serena in women's singles, however the back and forth rallying between the two talented players drew more intense as the match commenced.
Vandeweghe hit two volleys, but Serena passed her with a crosscourt forehand to clinch the win that bought fans, and even Kastles owner Mark Ein, to render a standing ovation for Williams.
It wouldn't be the first game on the evening that Williams won over Vandeweghe.
Williams also helped lead mixed doubles, pairing with Leander Paes to crush Boston's Butorac and Vandeweghe 5-1.
The second half of the dynamic tennis duo Williams sisters, Serena was well prepared to give fans a delight filled evening that included the likes of First Lady Michelle Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia, as well as White House chef, Sam Cass. Several athletes watched Williams' performance including former Redskins Darryl Pounds and Ken Harvey. Former DC Mayor Adrian Fenty was present, as was former Washington Wizard Caron Butler.
On a hot, muggy Washington, DC summer day Williams participated in a tennis clinic earlier in the day with youth from the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center.
"You just never know how may influence a child", Williams said.
Williams missed play action with the Kastles last year due to the foot injury she sustained stepping on glass in a restaurant. Kastles owner Mark Ein thanked Williams for her contribution to the Kastles organization and presented her with her own personal WTT Championship ring. The Kastles were the 2009 WTT Champions when they defeated the New York Sportimes and the Springfield Lasers.
The Kastles' season continues July 12 with tennis great John McEnroe. Venus Williams began the Kastles winning season July 5th.
