Out At Redskins Park: Training Camp. Day 1

Friday officially began the first day of training camp for the Washington Redskins at Redskins Park.

A few observations we immediately noticed was the onfield participation of both Brandon Banks and Malcolm Kelly. The two players had fans wondering about their return status for the upcoming season (Banks, stab wound. Kelly hamstring).

Suffice it to say both Kelly and Banks practiced. Banks looked great catching passes. Kelly looked strong running.

Their official status with the team will be revealed at a later date.

Newly signed quarterback Ben Chappell (Indiana) got in some practice passes, as did Washington’s starting quarterback, John Beck.

Missing In Action
Sources revealed that the acquisition of Donte' Stallworth to the ‘Skins is still in the works. He was not on the field for Day 1 of training camp.

The first day looked a bit off centered as several familiar faces were missing from the team. As noted, Clinton Portis was released from the team during the off season, and just as late as yesterday veterans Phillip Daniels and Casey Rabach were also released. As we previously reported former Redskin quarterback Donovan McNabb was traded to the Minnesota Vikings and Albert Haynesworth found a new home with the New England Patriots.

Familiar Faces
The return of Santana Moss to the roster, as well as seeing the familiar faces of Mike Sellers and Chris Cooley on the practice field made for some familiarity.
It should be noted here that under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) players won’t have two-a-day practices. Good for players not having to worry about the excessive 90 degree temperatures (good for media as well).

In a New Direction
The team is going in a new direction, bringing in much younger players, including all twelve of their 2011 NFL draft picks. The list includes first round draft pick Ryan Kerrigan (Purdue), and second round pick Jarvis Jenkins out of Clemson. The Skins also signed Miami wide receiver Leonard Hankerson, and Nebraska’s Roy Helu as running back. See full draft picks below.

Training camp officially opens to the public on Saturday, July 30. See official training camp schedule here.
