FedExField, home of the Washington Redskins, announced that it will host a match between the world’s two best soccer clubs when Manchester United battles FC Barcelona on July 30, 2011, at 7 p.m. ET.
Manchester United, the most successful club in modern English soccer, will play FC Barcelona, the most successful club in Spanish soccer history as part of the 2011 World Football Challenge. It will be the first appearance for both at FedExField and will mark the second time in three years the stadium has hosted an international match. In 2009, a crowd of 72,368 watched D.C. United take on Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid C.F.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for American soccer fans to see two of the most prestigious clubs in the world playing each other in the United States,” Redskins Chief Marketing Officer Mitch Gershman said. “We are honored to be the site of this match and proud to bring such a high-profile event for our season ticket holders and to the Washington D.C. region.”
Currently leading the English Premier League and in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League, the Red Devils are managed by legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson. Their world-class roster includes star English striker Wayne Rooney, legendary Welsh midfielder Ryan Giggs and 22-year-old Mexican sensation Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez.
Arguably the best team in the world, the Catalunyas play a style of soccer that is not only breathtaking but also of the highest quality. Filled with World Cup stars, Barcelona will feature captain Carles Puyol, as well as 2010 World Football Player of the Year (FIFA Ballon d’Or) finalists Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta, both midfielders for World Cup Champion Spain.
The Manchester United-FC Barcelona match adds to an all-star lineup of events at FedExField as part of the Redskins’ commitment to provide diverse entertainment options, including premier college football games, world-class performers and more, to the community and season ticket holders.
Tickets are expected to go on sale to the general public in late April at www.TICKETMASTER.com. Redskins suite and premium season ticket holders enjoy a right of first refusal for tickets to most special events held at FedExField. They will be notified in the near future regarding their opportunity to purchase tickets.
