2010 WNBA World Championship and No Mystics?

University of Connecticut's Head Coach and coach of FIBA's 2010 event, Geno Auriemma chats with WNBA players.

Are you as disappointed as we are to find that of the 23 WNBA players representing the eight countries in the 2010 World Championship that no player from the Washington Mystics is represented?

USA Basketball announced its 12-player roster last Tuesday that included with 11 players from the WNBA, to include a few players (Swin Cash and Sue Bird) from the 2010 WNBA Championship team, the Seattle Storm. Other players include Tamika Catchings and Tina Charles. (See full list here).

Surpisingly, none of the talented Washington Mystics players will represent in this year's contest.

The player selections, made by the USA Basketball Women’s National Team Player Selection Committee, were announced following a two and a half-week training camp that included four exhibition games.

“This was an extremely difficult decision for the committee to make,” said USA Basketball Women’s National Team Director and USA Selection Committee member Carol Callan. “After four exhibition games and the scrimmage against the Czech Republic, we believe we have selected the 12 players who will make the best team to be competitive at the World Championship.

The Women's World Championship was held four years ago in Brazil.

The USA opens World Championship play against Greece on Sept. 23 (tonight) at 6:00 p.m. (12:00 p.m. EDT) and all of the USA’s games will air live on NBA TV.
