Howard University's Zykia Brown (Riverdale, Md./Parkdale H.S.) scored the game-tying 3-pointer at the end of regulation and Howard rallied from a 15-point deficit to defeat Holy Cross in overtime, 87-80 in the consolation game of the Hawk Holiday Classic presented by Staybridge Suites and Hotels.
The Lady Bison trailed by 15 with 10:09 remaining in the second half before a Brown layup spurred a 10-0 HU run over the next six minutes, trimming the lead to five with under four minutes left in regulation.
Meredith Ward hit a trey for Holy Cross to push the Crusader advantage to eight with 3:58 remaining, but Howard chipped away at the lead on a pair of baskets by Saadia Doyle (Atlanta, Ga./Columbia H.S.) and a long 3-ball by Tamoria Holmes (Durham, N.C./Hillside H.S.).
Holy Cross led by one with 17 seconds left but a Whitney Fremeau layup gave the Crusaders a three-point advantage with under 10 seconds remaining in regulation.
Down by three with six seconds left, Brown took a few dribbles and drained a 3-pointer with: 01 left to even the score at 72-72 and send the game to overtime.
The extra frame was all Howard and HU opened up a 10-point lead with under a minute left. Cheyenne Curley-Payne’s (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake H.S.) free-throw with 49 seconds remaining capped an 11-3 Bison run and Howard never relinquished the lead for the seven-point come from behind win.
Doyle bested her career-high from the previous night and finished with 31 points and 14 rebounds, her seventh double-double of the year. Brown had 29 points to go along with three assists and three rebounds while Holmes, Jalisa Pullins (Decatur, Ga./Southwest DeKalb H.S.) and DonnaLee Scharschmidt (Palm Beach, Fla./Summit Christian) added six points each.
Pullins chipped in four assists and four rebounds while Curley-Payne dished out a team-high five assists. The freshman also pulled down a career-high seven rebounds.
The Lady Bison had season-highs in field-goal percentage (50.8%; 33-of-65 FG), assists (20), 3-point field-goals made (seven) and points scored (87).

Adding to the Howard accolades on the evening, Freshman Saadia Doyle (Atlanta, Ga./Columbia H.S.) has been named to the Hawk Holiday Classic presented by Staybridge Suites and Hotels All-Tournament team.
Doyle totaled 51 points and 22 rebounds in two games during the tourney. The forward posted a career-high 31 points and 14 rebounds in a win over Holy Cross, her seventh double-double of the year, and added 23 points and eight boards against Monmouth.
The Atlanta native also shot 68% from the field (19-of-28 FG) and connected on 16-of-17 attempts from the charity stripe (94%).
Howard returns to action with a Jan. 5 matchup against Colgate. Game time against the Raiders is slated for 7 p.m. in Hamilton, N.Y.
