Bill Cosby and Ross Perot To Participate
The UCLA Bruins will meet the Temple Owls in the 2009 EagleBank Bowl at RFK Stadium. The December 29th contest will the be first ever meeting between the two football programs.
The EagleBank Bowl will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 29th in Washington, D.C.’s RFK Stadium.
Ross Perot will serve as Honorary Host for the coin toss. Temple football alum and comedian Bill Cosby to give remarks this week on the upcoming Bowl game.
ESPN will broadcast the game live.
“This is a great matchup between two quality football programs that are on the rise,” said Steve Beck, Executive Director of the EagleBank Bowl. “Both Rick Neuheisel at UCLA and Al Golden at Temple have guided the resurgence of their respective programs with talented coaching staffs and players. What a treat for the fans of both schools and the residents of Washington, D.C.”
With one of the youngest rosters in the country, UCLA won three straight games in November to compile a 6-6 record and qualify for their first bowl game under second-year head coach Rick Neuheisel.
“We are excited to have the opportunity to play in the EagleBank Bowl,” said Neuheisel. “We have a lot of respect for what Coach Golden has accomplished at Temple and we are looking forward to a great game. It is also a thrill to play in our nation's capital. Most of our players have never been to Washington, D.C. and this will be a chance for them to learn about what makes our country great. We thank the EagleBank Bowl committee for the opportunity to play in their game.”
The Bruins have gotten it done with defense led by junior defensive tackle Brian Price, the Pacific-10 Defensive Player of the Year and first-team all-America by the American Football Coaches Association (ranked third nationally with 22.5 tackles for loss). A total of 11 Bruins were named to all Pac-10 teams. Joining Price on the first team were sophomore free safety Rahim Moore, the nation’s leader with nine interceptions and second team all-America by the Walter Camp Foundation, senior linebacker Reggie Carter, senior cornerback Alterraun Verner and junior place kicker Kai Forbath, who was named first-team all-America by the AFCA and won this year’s Lou Groza Award.
Temple accepted an at-large invitation to play in the EagleBank Bowl on December 6 and will be playing in their first bowl game in 30 years. Under fourth-year head coach Al Golden, the 2009 Mid-American Conference (MAC) Coach of the Year, the Owls are one of the hottest teams in college football this season. The squad rolled off nine consecutive victories to post a 9-3 overall mark for their first winning record since 1990.
“Playing in the EagleBank Bowl is great for our team and a great next step for our program,” said Golden. “Coach Neuheisel and his staff have done a tremendous job in just two years and we look forward to playing them in D.C. We are happy to be playing close to home in a wonderful city like the nation's capital.”
Temple had a school-record eight football players named to the all-MAC first team including sophomore defensive end Adrian Robinson, the 2009 MAC Defensive Player of the Year and freshman running back Bernard Pierce, the 2009 MAC Freshman of the Year. Robinson, who is ranked 10th nationally in sacks (0.92 per game), set the school season record with 12 sacks this year. All-America candidate Pierce burst on the scene in 2009, setting school freshman records for yards (1,308), touchdowns (15) and 100-yard rushing games (6).
In the inaugural EagleBank Bowl in 2008, Wake Forest defeated Navy, 29-19, before nearly 30,000 fans at RFK Stadium.
Tailgate Party
The EagleBank Bowl will hold the game’s official Tailgate Party at the DC Armory on December 29 from 12:30 – 4:30 p.m. The Tailgate Party will feature an all-you-can-eat buffet with food provided by popular D.C. restaurants. Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for children ages 4-12 and free for children 3 and under.
Tailgate Party restaurants include local favorites Clyde’s, Tony & Joe’s, J. Paul’s and Old Glory.
Also on the day’s menu is plenty of music and entertainment including appearances by live bands, pep bands and cheerleaders from the participating schools. EA Sports will provide interactive games onsite including Xbox and Nintendo Wii, as well as raffle off games to attending fans.
