Howard University Loses Homecoming Game to North Carolina A&T

A tough homecoming loss for Howard this weekend as the 0-4 Bison fall prey, 30-19, Saturday at Green Stadium.

In what looked like a promising contest early on, the Bison looked good on the score board.

A touchdown by freshman running back, Andra Williams put the Bison out front first as he scored the game’s first TD, completing seven yards.

The Bison led at the half, 13-7, scoring two field goals respectively, with the help of punter Dennis Wiehberg.

As the Howard Showtime Marching Band finished its halftime performance and introduced this year’s Homecoming court, the crowd was pumped and ready for what many thought would be a continuation of Howard controlling the game.

Not quite.

Just as the skies threatened rain off and on for most of the first half, eventually opening up to a torrential downpour at the start of the third, the Aggies began threatening Howard’s special teams.

Aggie running back, Dontavious Payne ran for a seventy-yard touchdown that resulted in a 17-13 lead, just minutes into the third.

Payne would once again score in Howard territory, giving him 113 total yards rushing in the game.

In the fourth quarter, with Howard attempting its comeback feat, they regained possession to score off a thirty-yard pass from quarterback Floyd Haigler to wide receiver, Willie Carter with 4:37 remaining.

But the Aggies weren’t having it.

North Carolina’s Mike Mayhew scored a five-yard touchdown (his second) with 4:26 left in the game to seal the win for North Carolina who are now 5-3 in MEAC standings.

A tough ’09 season for the Bison as they lose their third straight after opening the month with a 7-3 win over Winston-Salem State.

The Bison face South Carolina State in their next game on October 31st.
