"There’s a lot of fresh energy around here. From the top to the bottom." - Keisha Brown, Mystics guard.
Friday was Washington Mystics media day on the Verizon Center's practice court. As the team welcomes back its seasoned players, and a few new additions, we spoke to a few of the players to get their take on the upcoming season.
Keisha Brown (#8): "We’re going to be lot more of an up-tempo team than we have been in the past. I think it’s going to be exciting. There’s a lot of fresh energy around here - from top to the bottom. I think we’re going to make it work for us."
Brown spent the last two seasons with the Los Angeles Sparks. She started her WNBA career in Washington, and was with the Mystics from 2002-2005. She also played with the New York Liberty, Houston Comets and the Minnesota Lynx.
Alana Beard (#20): Fresh back from overseas (and celebrating a birthday on the day before), Beard tells DC UrbanSports she's excited about the upcoming season, and that she loves the energy of new head coach, Julie Plank, but is disappointed about losing former teammate, Coco Miller. "I understand the front office has to make tough decisions at times". Beard says while she was overseas, teammate Monique Currie kept her abreast of the action during the offseason. AB’s on Twitter. Chasity Melvin (#44) on returning to the Mystics roster: "I’m excited to be back with the Mystics. I’ve known Angela (Taylor) for a long time, and Julie (Plank) called me and kept contacting me about the new things they were trying to bring to the Mystics, and they kind of won me over."
Marissa Coleman: On joining the Mystics roster: I’m excited to just play again, and play with a lot of the girls I’m familiar with. It’s going to be a fun summer. About the Mystics:
The Mystics begin training camp this week and the roster includes Beard, Currie, Melvin, Matee Ajavon and Lindsey Harding - as well as the 2009 first round draft pick, Marissa Coleman.
Washington will travel to New York to face the Liberty in a school day pre-season game to be played at 10:30 am on Thursday, May 21.
