September 14, 2008 - It was a somber day for the Washington Mystics franchise, as the team lost their season finale to the Mercury Lynx, 96-70 at the Verizon Center.
Alana Beard scored 17 points for the Mystics, in front of Tasha Humphrey’s eleven points.
Play maker, Coco Miller, recently signed to two more years, had four assists, while guard Laurie Koehn had two three-point conversions.
Charde Houston scored 18 points to lead the Minnesota Lynx.
Lynx coach, Don Zierden says he was glad for win, “but making it to the playoffs would have been better.”
The Mystics’ hopes for the Playsoffs were also dashed for this season.
Yesterday’s game, in addition to being the last game of the season, was Fan Appreciation Day.
Fans were honored for their loyalty with $1 hotdogs, and a visit from the Washington Capitals hockey player Alex Ovechkin.
After the game, team mates Nakia Sanford and Nikki Blue both took to the mic to thank the fans for all their support throughout the season.
“Thank you for hanging in there with us this season. We hope to see you back next year, where we’ll be better than ever”, said Nikki Blue.
A teary-eyed Sanford said, “I know this season hasn’t been what you expected, but thank you for hanging in there and giving us your support.”
The Washington Mystics finished next to last place in the Eastern Conference, behind the Atlanta Dream, with a record of ten wins and twenty-four losses.
The Lynx finished last place in the Western Conference, with a record of 16-18.
