July 14, 2007 - The Allen Iverson Celebrity Softball Classic, held again this year at Bowie Baysox Stadium, brought more fans, and more celebs.
Even though Allen’s All Stars were defeated by the WPGC home team 8-11, the game was nothing short of fun for all who attended.
The game began with the legendary Patti LaBelle singing the National Anthem.
“I’ve been a fan of his for a long time, and he is so phenomenal”, Ms. LaBelle told DC Urban Sports.
“I love Allen and his family and what he does for the community and for kids – our future. So, I’m here because I was asked to be, and I was able to be.”
La La, MTV’s VJ, was the celebrity announcer for the game.
WPGC’s 'Bruiser' came out strong in the first inning, hitting an out of the ball park home run for the WPGC home team.
During the game, Allen presented a check to Bowie State University in the amount of $25,000 as part of the Foundation’s academic scholarship endowment program. Bowie State is the latest Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to be added in to the program. Other universities include Joseph C. Smith, and St. Augustine’s University. Plans to add more universities are forthcoming.
As part of the foundation’s efforts to raise funds to continue to enrich the lives of youth, Allen auctioned and signed, full-length replica photos of himself. This is the first year the six foot tall photos were presented and auctioned.
The celebrity game included such noted celebrities and athletes such as actress Vivica A Fox, boxer Floyd Mayweather, Seattle Seahawks’ Nate Burlesman, and Allen’s Denver Nuggets teammate, Carmello Anthony.
Despite the Iverson All Stars making a brief comeback, this year’s team was no match for the heavy hitting sluggers of WPGC.
This year marks the first loss for the Iverson All Stars in seven years.
