The Washington Redskins Alumni Association welcomed legendary Redskins, including 1984 Pro Football Hall of Famer Charlie Taylor, 1982 NFL MVP Mark Moseley, three-time pro bowlers Pat Fischer, Roy Jefferson, Mike Nelms and Larry Brown to their ‘Rally Around The Redskins’ Alumni' luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Reston yesterday.

“It’s always a very good feeling for us to get together”, said Redskin alum Larry Brown. “For a period there we didn’t see each other very often."

He credits Redskins' General Manager Bruce Allen for bringing the alum back into the spotlight.

“Since Bruce Allen’s arrival here things have changed. He’s included us in community affairs programs, he’s made us a part of the marketing and also he has given us the proper recognition. So, for that we are deeply grateful.”

In agreement was former Redskin Jimmy Johnson.

“We’re an asset that wasn’t being used”, Johnson said. “There’s so much we could have been doing in the community. Johnson, a former New York Jet, said the Redskins are now reminiscent of how the Jets recognize their alumni players.

Said Johnson, “They [the Jets] have a fantastic alumni that reaches out into the community.”

Redskin’s alumnus and area broadcasting personality Rick “Doc” Walker emceed the event that gave fans the opportunity to interact with Redskins greats while supporting the Wounded Warrior Project and the Chance Harman Foundation, which focuses on pediatric brain tumor research.

The event also featured a representative from Stop the Silence, a Glen Dale, MD organization geared toward highlighting and ending child sexual abuse.

Former Redskin Mark Moseley, whose own family member, including his wife Sandy, have been victims of sexual abuse, praised the organization’s work. “It helps a lot to know that there’s maybe something you can do to stop the abuse for another child out there”, said Mrs. Moseley.

Yesterday’s event also honored Redskin linebacker London Fletcher who received the 2011 Player of the Year honor.

“There’s so many men who come before me”, said Fletcher speaking of Redskin alumni. “I know that I walk in their shadow, their footprints, and I’m trying to live up to the standard that they’ve played.”

Fletcher has played in 235 consecutive games. During last week’s win over the Dallas Cowboys he intercepted a Tony Romo pass in the third quarter - the 20th of his career. He joins Ray Lewis and Brian Urlacher as the third active player to have at least 20 interceptions and 30 sacks in his career.

“These are some of the greatest players that have ever played the sport of football, so I’m humbled and honored to be recognized.”

The Redskins prepare to take on the New York Giants Monday, Dec. 3, 2012. Kickoff from FedEx Field is set for 8:30 p.m.

Fletcher, still visibly bothered by a sprained ankle received during the 38-31 win over Dallas last week, said when we asked if he’d be ready to play said, “That’s the plan.”

Side note:   The alums were very pleased to get a win over Dallas and also very pleased to see the acquistion of quarterback Robert Griffin, III.

"They're moving in the right direction" was the general consensus about the 2012 Redskins team.
