The Howard softball team suffered a tough weekend in Lubbock, Texas after taking losses from Dayton and No. 19/20 Texas Tech in the Red Raider Classic.
The Bison (3-8) met tournament hosts Texas Tech (22-0) three times throughout the weekend. Howard opened the Classic with a 8-0 shutout loss at the hands of the Red Raiders. Christine Sborz was the only member of the Bison to muster a hit against Texas Tech’s Kelsey Dennis and started off the game with a leadoff double.
On the mound for Howard was Carly Martin who allowed eight earned runs on eight hits and five walks. Martin was unable to deliver a strikeout against the nationally-ranked powerhouse throughout the game.
In their second meeting, Howard took another shutout loss, 10-0. Sborz finished the game with another hit while Ciera Gordon, Andascha Moore and Candace Rogers also posted hits.
Samantha Gatson pitched four innings and gave up ten hits on eight earned runs, walking six and striking out none. The loss was her first on the season.
In the final face off in their trio of games, Howard took another heavy loss to the Red Raiders on Sunday, wrapping up the weekend with a 7-1 loss. Despite losing the game, Howard ended Tech’s five game-shutout streak and held them to their fewest runs scored since Feb. 25, 2011.
Howard’s run also ended Tech’s newly established record of most consecutive innings without allowing a run as Brittany Barker delivered a RBI single with bases loaded, giving the Bison an early 1-0 lead. Barker finished the game with two hits, and was the only Bison to land more than one hit against Tech over the span of the weekend.
Sborz sacked her third hit of the Classic in their final game against Tech. Sborz has now posted at least one hit in six of the Bison’s eight games this season. She is now on a four-game hitting streak. Marisa Coats also added with a hit of her own while Andascha scored Howard’s sole run.
The lead would diminish quickly after the Red Raiders cracked the game wide open with a three-run homer giving them a comfortable 5-1 lead. Emily Johnson took her fourth loss of the season after giving up six runs, in which three came from seven hits spanning four innings.
In between Howard’s match ups with Texas Tech, the Bison took on Dayton (7-7) in a duo of games. On Friday Howard scored three runs against Dayton and were led by Lorae Robinson who posted two hits. Eight members of the Bison recorded hits in the 10-3 loss.
Johnson and Gatson shared the mound, while Johnson was given the loss. Johnson pitched 4.2 innings and gave up six runs on six hits and three walks, including three homers. She did manage however, to blast four strikeouts. Gatson came in for an inning and gave up two hits, four runs and a walk.
On Saturday, Howard dropped again to Dayton, but posted six hits in the 7-1 loss. Gordon posted two hits, while three other members of the Lady Bison posted a hit. Martin took the loss in the circle after giving up seven earned runs on seven hits and five walks. She equaled Gatson, posting a tournament best, four strikeouts against the Flyers.
Up next the Bison will travel to Tempe, Ariz. on March 11-13 for the Diamond Devil Invitational. Visit www.Howard-Bison.com for further updates on the Howard softball team.

Washington Kastles Have A New Name, And Location
Those who frequent Water Street in Southwest DC know the area for it's nighttime vibe of clubs, summer nights along the Potomac, seafood restaurants, and Hogates.
Hogates, the once lively water front hot spot known for dining and dancing, resided at 800 Water Street for more than two decades and was a popular spot for Sunday brunches and after work happy hours. It was closed (for various reasons) and reopened as H20 in another life, but was short lived and eventually closed its doors in 2008 after a rash of violence plagued the establishment.
The site was eventually demolished last year.
Everything Old is New Again
Resurrecting in its place this summer, and adding further life to Southwest's renovation project, is the new home of the Washington Kastles tennis team.
"Kastles Stadium at The Wharf" will feature world class tennis along the Potomac at its newest venue beginning July 5, 2011.
The Kastles' previous home was the site of the old DC Convention Center on the corner of 9th Street, NW which is itself undergoing construction for a mix-used community.
Kastles owner, Mark Ein is pleased with the Kastles' newest location.
"We were looking for something that would take the Kastles experience to even higher levels, and as soon as we came down here and saw the opportunity to build the stadium on the water's edge with views of the Jefferson Memorial, and the Washington Monument it just seemed like the perfect place. We couldn't be happier to be here."
The new stadium will be neighbor to future hotels, cafes, offices, and residences, in a mixed-used setting and will offer parking underneath the stadium along with the existing three parking garages across the street.
"So there's more than enough parking for our fans each and every night", added Ein. (Speaking of parking: Thanks to the staff of the Washington Kastles PR team who footed the bill for our street parking while covering today's event).
The soon-to-be-built stadium is also accessible via the Waterfront-SEU and L’Enfant Plaza metro stations.
The venue is sited near the Jefferson Junior High. Several students were on hand to demonstrate Quick Start Tennis, a module the Kastles, for the past three seasons, have hosted to more than 800 local children at tennis clinics.
A core principal of the Kastles' franchise, and its mission, is to give back to those less fortunate in the Washington region. Since its inception, the team has donated more than 6,000 match tickets, 3,000 tennis rackets and cash grants and other donations totaling more than $500,000 to local charities, youth groups and armed forces organizations.
The 2009 World Team Tennis champions Washington Kastles bring several top level tennis players to the Nation's Capital. Among them, 17th ranked Sam Querry; 27-time Grand Slam Champion, Venus Williams and 21-time Grand Slam Champion, Serena Williams.
We asked Ein if Serena Williams, out with a foot injury that caused her to miss several tennis matches since last July, would be ready to compete with the Kastles this season.
PN Hoffman Construction Development.
"She's planning to be ready by the time our season starts, and we're counting on her. We really love having Serena being a part of our team and hope she will be here this summer", Ein said.
After the upcoming World Team Tennis Roster Draft on March 15, 2011, where teams select the remainder of their players, the Kastles are confident they will be a strong contender for the 2011 World Team Tennis Championship. Back by popular demand, Anna Kournikova and John McEnroe will also return DC to do battle against the 2011 Kastles this July.

Zab Zudah KOs Mabuza and Tyson Loves It!
Thirty-three year old Zab Zudah (41-6, 28 KOs) KOs Kaizer Mabuza (23-7-3, 14 KOs)Round 7 of a 12 round bout.
“For six to seven weeks I went to college and I got a Ph.D.,” said Judah referencing his work with Whitaker, who he called one of the greatest defensive fighters of all time. “I graduated with honors tonight. Thank you, baby.”
Watch as Zudah does work (and Mike Tyson approves).
Said Zudah via his Twitter account: "I wanna thank all of you guys that came or tuned in this is all to show you if the LORD is 4 you who can be against you!! Love and blessing"
Mike Tyson, who was at ring side, gave his two cents via his FaceBook account:
Wow! Zab you blew my mind last night. God willing Zab should win come back fighter of the year. I'm so proud of you.
Zab you gave young boxing kids hope and inspiration to never give up even in your darkest moments when everybody tells you it's over and you feel deep in your heart that it's not.
Mike (I guess it's him) continues to praise Zudah about his amazing comeback:
Zab refused to give up on his dreams at a time when everyone pretty much thought he wasn't the fighter he use to be, including myself.
The moral of the story is 'who are we?' And I commend him for that from one champion to another. I'll be seeing you in the Hall of Fame very shortly.
Local Fighters Doin' Their Thing!
The Judah v Mabuza fight was in Las Vegas, but you can see local boxing this weekend at the Patriot Center when Jimmy Lange takes on Jimmy Holmes in a ten-round, 160 lb contest.
Also on the card, local standout George “Wartime” Rivera (11-6, 4 KOs) faces Shakir Ashante, as William Joppy vs. Cory Cummings rematch as the evening's co-main event.
For more check out ipboxing.com.
In other local boxing news our heavyweight fav, Seth Mitchell, continues to shut his opponents down as he defeated Charles Davis with a second-round TKO, also last night, in Anaheim, California's Honda Center.
Mitchell (21-0-1, 15 KOs) knocked down Davis (now 19-21-3) not 1, not 2, not 3, but FOUR (count 'em) times before the fight was eventually stopped.
Lovin' it!
On April 9th, watch the ladies of boxing do their thing as an all-female fight takes place at Sugar Ray Leonard's boxing center in Palmer Park, MD. For more visit www.fightlady.biz.

Howard's Season Finale: Um... Not So Great
After dropping to Maryland Eastern Shore on the road this past Saturday, the Lady Bison looked to take down the Hampton Pirates – the No. 1 ranked team in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference – in their final game of the regular season.
Unfortunately the Bison (13-17, 9-7 MEAC) would not come out on top as the Pirates (22-6, 15-1 MEAC) took the win, 60-54. Seniors Jalisa Pullins and Amanda Edwards where honored prior to tip off and each garnered starts against their conference foe.
Although the Pirates have already clinched the regular season title and will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming tournament, the Bison did not shy away from the historic rivalry as Howard kept pace with a Pirate team that leads the MEAC in scoring defense (53.6 ppg allowed) and second in overall scoring (65.3).
The Bison were only outscored in the paint by four points (30-26), while the Pirates combined for 29 points off turnovers and second chances compared to Howard’s 21. The quickness and depth of Howard’s roster afforded them eight points on fast breaks and 13 points from the bench, while Hampton was held to zero points in those categories.
“We needed to get the ball in the paint more and create more offensive and inside plays,” head coach Niki Geckeler said. “We weren’t able to finish in transition. We needed more free throws.”
Hampton maintained the lead for the majority of the game and balanced their offense with four players who scored in double figures. The Bison relinquished 17 turnovers by the conclusion of the game.
Headlining the Bison in the season finale was sophomore Saadia Doyle who garnered 20 points, nine rebounds, two steals and an assist. Doyle was recently named the 2010-11MEAC Player of the Year following an impressive season where she led the conference in scoring (18.2), was second in rebounding (8.9), fourth in shooting (45 percent), and fifth in free throw shooting (76 percent) entering the game. With today’s game in the books, the former MEAC Rookie of the Year has racked in 549 points on the year, inching her further up the Howard All-time scoring list.
Teaming up with Doyle was sophomore guard Cheyenne Curley-Payne who recorded 19 points, seven rebounds and two steals against Hampton. Sophomore Tamoria Holmes also chimed in with eight points three rebounds, and finished first on the team in assists (3) alongside Curley-Payne.
“We made some adjustments,” Geckeler said. “We limited their plays at the end, especially on the inside, but they had key players in penetration.”
With less than a minute left the Bison tried to make a run to capture the lead and the win after being down 48-57. Strong defense on the part of Curley-Payne led to a Pirate turnover as Jericka Jenkins fumbled the ball out of bounds. Doyle drew a foul on an attempted layup and was successful at the line (1-1), inching the Bison closer to a hopeful win.
Several successful trips to the line would allow Hampton to eventually secure the game, ending Howard’s eight-game winning streak at home.
“I feel that we fought hard,” Curley-Payne said, “but we just came up short.”
Next week the Lady Bison will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. for the MEAC Tournament.

More To It Than We Thought?
Serena Williams' foot condition may be symptom of something more.
A frail looking Serena Williams walking with the help of a scooter.
After hearing last year that tennis star Serena Williams sustained a foot injury when she stepped on glass in a restaurant, we've learned that the actual account may be something more.
An unconfirmed source is reporting that Serena has a bone disorder called osteomyelitis.
Osteomyelitis can cause severe pain causing an inability to put weight on the limb that is affected.
Serena shown here last year with a stone studded cast.
Further unconfirmed sources say Williams is apparently not responding to the drug Vancomycin (used to treat bacterial infections), reportedly prescribed to treat her ailment.
The drug can cause a wide range of side affects. One being a sore throat, another, severe leg pain, sometimes causing bone marrow suppression.
Serena tweeted in January: My throat feels raw. every time I take a sip of sumthin' it feels like i just swallowed 20,000 mini knives.
This week Serena suffered a pulmonary embolism allegedly from a blood clot in her leg that traveled to her lungs.
Her spokesperson gave the following statement:
"Monday Serena Williams underwent emergency treatment at Cedars [Sinai] for a hematoma she suffered as a result of treatment for a more critical situation."
Operative word: critical.
She also underwent surgery to remove the clot in her lungs.
Again, we're not sure about the validity of the said reports, but we're wishing the best for Serena, as always, and hope that she soon recovers to return to excellent tennis shape.

Cox Scores To Boost HU Lacrosse to 15-14 Win

Senior Desiree Cox lifted the Howard women’s lacrosse team to their first win of the season with the game-winning in an overtime thriller against the Marywood Pacers. Cox’s six goals helped push the Bison to their 15-14 win.
The Bison flew to an early 5-0 lead over the Pacers before eventually allowing four unanswered goals. Howard would regain control and never let up their lead and ensued to score four additional quick goals in the second half.
In the later part of the second period, however, Marywood’s Kimberly Commisso took advantage of a free position shot and inched Marywood within a goal of Howard’s 11-10lead. Cox immediately responded with a goal to push Howard back up, 12-10.
A critical point in the final minutes of the game came when freshman Imani McLeary sacked her second yellow card, allowing Marywood another free position attempt. Marywood’s Taylor McKeown took advantage of the opportunity and successfully tied the game at 12 goals a piece with 7:12 left on the clock.
Junior Cheryse Cox garnered a free position shot of her own immediately following Marywood’s score and broke the tie to bring Howard up 13-12. Another Marywood score would bring the game back to a tie. Marywood would attempt to take the game with less than 30 seconds left in regulation, but HU’s goalie Amber Meeks garnered a crucial save in the net to send the match into overtime. Meeks would go on to finish the game with 12 saves.
Commisso jumpstarted the first overtime period with a goal, giving Marywood their first lead of the game. Desiree would have an opportunity to tie the game with a free position shot with time expired, but missed. She would rebound, however, to claim her fifth goal of the game off an assist from Cheryse. Cheryse led the Bison with two assists on the day.
Desiree would be granted another pair of chances after scoring what would have been the game-winning goal, however the point was taken away as a result of a Marywood foul. With less than a minute remaining, Desiree was allowed another free position shot, where she nailed the goal that afforded the Bison their first win of the season.
Desiree scored a season-high six goals in the game and led the Bison with 15 shots. Cheryse chimed in with thee goals on 12 total shots, while Courtland Lackey added two goals on three shots. Chastity Dailey, Ashley Lawrence, and Cynithia Smalls finished the game with a goal a piece to assist Howard in it’s highest scoring game thus far into the season.

Redskins Charitable Foundation Scholarship

The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation (WRCF) is again providing one high-potential, low-income high school senior with a $25,000 college scholarship.
Administered by the DC College Success Foundation (www.dccollegesuccessfoundation.org), the WRCF scholarship will provide one deserving public high school student in either the District of Columbia or Prince George’s County, MD with a college scholarship that will be disbursed in $5,000 increments annually. The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation chose to establish a $25,000 college scholarship that will be disbursed throughout the student’s collegiate career because oftentimes with smaller scholarships, students are forced to search for additional funds or drop out of school after their freshman year.
Additionally, the WRCF chose the DC College Success Foundation to administer the scholarship in part because of their strong working scholarship model that places scholarship recipients in a mentoring program that requires the student to work with a mentor during their freshman year to help ensure success.
High school seniors attending either a District of Columbia Public School or Prince George’s County Public School may apply for the scholarship by visiting here.
Other
Redskins release Derrick Dockery, Andre Carter.
Carter: In his five seasons (2006-10) with the Redskins, Carter played in 80 games with 67 starts and registered 34 quarterback sacks. Carter played in all 16 games with five starts in 2010. He finished the season with 59 tackles (41 solo), including three for loss, 20 quarterback hurries, 2.5 sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one pass defensed.
Dockery: In his six seasons (2003-06, 2009-10) with the Redskins, Dockery played in 85 games with 79 starts, including five games and two starts in 2010. He was originally selected by the Redskins in the third round (81st overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft. He played two seasons in Buffalo (2007-08) before returning to Washington.
