Caps Defeat Rivals!

Fan Appreciation Week just keeps on getting better. And what could be better for Caps fans than beating arch rival (and Stanley Cup winner), the Pittsburgh Penguins?

The Caps defeated the Penguins 6-3 (on their turf) last evening in the final regular season match up between the two.

The Caps had four players who scored in the game's opening. Ovechkin had seven goals and 10 points and was plus-8 in the four Caps-Penguins games this season.

The win gives the Caps a season’s series (4-0) sweep from the Penguins for the first time in franchise history. (See game highlights).

This should make the playoffs very, very interesting.

Howard Tennis Defeats Georgetown

The Howard women's tennis team defeated Georgetown, 4-3 on Tuesday for its eighth consecutive win. The victory marked another milestone as HU defeated all the DC area schools for the first time in 25 years.

The Lady Bison, who have not lost a match since March 19, previously defeated George Washington on March 28 and George Mason on March 31.

In singles action against the Hoyas, sophomore Michelle Brown improved to 13-2 on the year with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lauren Grecco at the No. 1 spot.

Freshman sensation Brittney Morgan pushed her singles record to 12-2 after defeating Vicky Sekely in three sets.

Senior Michele Gee defeated Samantha Martin at No. 5 singles and improved to 8-4 on the season while Anne Ahkimien came from behind to win at No. 6 singles; she improved to 9-4 with the victory.

Howard (12-3, 5-0 MEAC) hosts Longwood on Saturday, April 10 in a senior day contest beginning at 1 PM.

Forget The Past, "I'm A Redskin."

McNabb Enters Washington Assured And Ready. Tells Philly, "Thanks For The Eleven Years."

Addressing the media, but not really addressing why he and Philly parted ways, except to say that "I'm glad that its over", Donovan McNabb was introduced yesterday as #5 of the Burgundy and Gold.

"I would have loved to have stayed in Philly, but I'm a Redskin now, expressed the 33year old."

McNabb's agent, Fletcher Smith, explained that while other teams where considered Washington was the best decision.

"When we looked at all the teams - and the Washington Redskins - it was because of Shanahan and the success that he's had over his career; and the success that he's had with John Elway - in particular - it just made Washington a very attractive place for Donovan."

Sporting a brown, vested suit with blue dress shirt and rust orange colored tie, McNabb said he felt like he was in the NFL draft again. "It's a new start, I feel like I'm twenty-two again."

McNabb ended an 11 year career with the Philadelphia Eagles. Some fans in Philly wanted him out. Some will almost assuredly regret that decision.

One guy whose hoping he won't have any regrets is Redskins' head coach Mike Shanahan.

"I’m excited, number one, to have him as our quarterback on our football team. He’s everything that you look for in a quarterback, and I’m not just talking about the physical attributes: leadership, how he carries himself, what he’ll do in his community, to the way he’ll lead this football team.", said Shanhan on bringing McNabb to Washington.

The two had never met prior to yesterday, but did have dinner the night before where Shanahan stated a "quick kinship evolved."

Redskin players have also taken a liking to the idea of having McNabb on the team. "Donovan's a hard worker; he's a real professional", Chris Cooley said of his new teammate.

With a new quarterback in town, there was still the question of whether or not Jason Campbell will be moving on, and if Donovan McNabb has taken over as the number one player on the Redskins' franchise. McNabb said he isn't trying to take Campbell's job.

"I called him and just let him know that this wasn’t one of my plans of coming to try to take his spot", said McNabb. "Jason is a great guy and hard worker and a friend that I continue to talk with throughout the years. I try to be a mentor to him, and I want to see nothing but success for him and the opportunity to revive his career."

Shanahan feels likewise stating that the team is willing to give Campbell every opportunity to find the right team.

"But if it doesn’t work out, Jason will come back to us going 110 percent" said Shanahan. "One thing you know about Jason Campbell is he’s a first class guy who gives it everything that he has. He’s going to look for something that he’s always wanted, and that’s to be a starter, a consistent starter for an organization. Obviously he knows the situation here and we’re going to give him every opportunity to seek what he’s looking for.”

When asked what McNabb was looking for while in Washington, McNabb replied, "Not much, other than a SuperBowl. Maybe see Obama."

"I'm sure I just can't show up", laughed McNabb.

Probably not, as it didn't work for this guy.

Obama, however, has congratulated and invited the Duke men's basketball team to the White House after winning the 2010 NCAA Championship this week.

McNabb will have to wait be invited, as well.

HItting 'Rock Bottom', Tiger Admits More Than We Knew

As Tiger prepares for the Masters 2010 in Augusta Georgia Tiger says I'm sorry for my...

Here's a snippet of the presser. Full transcript here.

Just an observation.
Doesn't that Darius Rucker-like goatee give him more of a bad boy appeal? When he was clean shaven, his image was that of a squeaky clean golfer and family man. (Until we found out otherwise).

Maybe his unshaven image will work in reverse and he'll actually be a better person.

More from the presser. Tiger shows love for the fans. Says "Thank you."

About that night. "I had a busted lip, and a sore neck."

Monday In Sports.

When The Presidential Pitch Goes Wrong. Extremely Wrong.

The President's pitch still isn't right. This year it was high, and off the mark.

"This is heartbreaking, right here," Obama moaned.

C'mon Mr. President. Haven't you practiced since last year? And don't you know you can't wear that Red Sox hat to a Washington Nationals game when you're throwing out the first pitch?

Where is the loyalty? Where is the dignity?

You've got to leave your love for your old town sports teams (at least keep it on the DL) when you're supposed to be representing the home town. Which is now Washington, Mr. President.

At least he wore a Nationals jacket.

At least he ditched the 'Daddy jeans' this year and opted for the more khacki-style pant.

President Obama is the 13th president to throw the ceremonial first pitch before a Washington baseball team game opener, and it wasn't just his pitch that went awry.

The Nationals' season opener didn't fare any better as the team fell to the Phillies 11-1.

Not a great way to start the season.

Out At Redskins Park: A New QB!

Out at Redskins Park the franchise has shown, yet again, they mean business for the upcoming 2010 NFL season.

The team continues to add - what the top brass in Ashburn hope is - leverage to last year's broken formula, by signing former Philadelphia Eagle, Donovan McNabb to the roster - as quarterback.

I say, as quarterback. (Exit Jason Campbell?)

The Skins get McNabb in exchange for their second round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft and a draft choice in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Donovan McNabb. A Philadelphia Eagle No More.

Just last year, during Redskins' training camp we saw signs like this one where fans were pulling to bring Michael Vick to Washington before the Eagles caught him. "We want Vick" the sign said.

The Redskins said then they were "not entertaining the idea."

Last month I asked coach Shanahan the same question, amid all the yet continued talk and speculation around bringing Vick to DC. "He's under contract", Shanahan told me.

But McNabb isn't.

And hence we now have at least one-half of the Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks. We have the five-time NFC Championship leader, six-time Pro Bowler, with 25,000 passing yards and 3,000 rushing yards (ranking among Randall Cunningham, Steve Young, Fran Tarkenton, Steve McNair and John Elway) at the helm of the Washington Redskins franchise as QB.

"Donovan is an accomplished quarterback who has been a proven winner in the National Football League,” Redskins Executive Vice President/Head Coach Mike Shanahan said. “I have long admired his competitiveness and feel he will be an outstanding addition to the Redskins and our community. He knows our division and the roadmap to success in the NFC East. He will set a high standard of excellence and we are very excited to welcome Donovan to the Washington Redskins."

Welcome to Washington, Mr. McNabb. Your NFC East rival team (and Philly fans in the DMV) are glad to have ya.

McNabb is expected to be introduced tomorrow at noon at Redskins Park.

It will be interesting to see if this former Eagle can fly in Washington.

Philly's Reid On The Trade

More Signing Out At Redskins Park.
Skins sign Willie Parker.

The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed running back Willie Parker. In six NFL seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers (2004-09), Parker has played in 79 games with 60 starts while accumulating 5,378 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns on 1,253 carries (4.3 avg.) and 84 receptions for 697 yards (8.3 avg.) and five touchdowns.

Parker, 29, has appeared in two Pro Bowls (2007 and 2008), and ranks 10th among all running backs in rushing yards (5,378) since entering the league in 2004. The 5-10, 209-pound, Parker has totaled 26 100-yard games, including a career-best 223-yard performance vs. Cleveland (12/7/06).
Can you start off Washington sports in Springtime any better?

The Wizards get a win Sunday, (that there in itself is good news any day of the week) ending their tumultuous losing streak by defeating the New Jersey Nets 109-99, on the road nonetheless.

Andray Blatche, proving yet again that he can ball when he wants to (we'd like to see it more and more), was just shy of a triple-double, scoring 20 points, 13 assists and nine rebounds in the contest.

So impressive, even coach Flip Saunders had to give props where due, remarking that "Dre set the tone" when the team efforts got a little behind.

For the Nets, Brook Lopez and Devin Harris led the charge with 22 points a piece, while Nets' rookie Terrence Williams added fifteen.

Can The Richest Help The Worst?

The Nets have an admirer, despite their current record. Their record (11-66) is even more dismal (look at all the Ls)than the Wizards'(23-53). However, billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, perhaps Russia's richest man, is interested in purchasing the worst team in the NBA.

DC Roller Girls Spring League Championship

After racing to identical 3-1 records during the regular season, the DC DemonCats and Scare Force One meet in the 2010 DC Rollergirls League Championship Bout on Saturday, April 10 at the DC Armory. Doors open at 3 p.m. and the action begins at 4 p.m.

Scare Force One captured the league’s first two championships, and as evidenced by their play this season, absence has made the heart grow fonder.

“This has been a great overall season for the DC Rollergirls from record fan attendance to intense competition on the track,” said Erik A Moses, managing director of the WCSA’s Sports, Entertainment and Special Events Division. “Both of these teams are very talented and hungry for the championship trophy so we might get an instant classic out of this bout.”

Scare Force One defeated the DemonCats for their second title in 2008 and each team has defeated the other during this regular season. Overall, the DC Rollergirls League is enjoying an average of over 1,500 fans per bout in its third season in the DC Armory.

The first bout of the day is an exhibition between the Cherry Blossom Bombshells and the Rogue Rollergirls of Fayetteville, N.C. The game entertainment includes a Raw Power Air Guitar competition for attending fans and a performance by the O’Neill-James School of Irish Dancing.

Mystics Sheila Johnson Honored By Congresswoman Norton

Another Accolade For An Amazing Lady

Johnson honored with Congressional Record by Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton before the start of the Mystics' basketball clinic for girls. [Photos: CD Brown for DCUS].

Congresswoman Norton helped close out Women’s History Month by presenting Washington Mystics President and Managing Partner Sheila C. Johnson a congressional record entry and celebrating D.C.’s own young women student athletes.

“I prefer focusing on women who are making history because those are the women who inspire the rest of us”, said Norton.

"Sheila Johnson is a one of a kind leader of women and girls of all backgrounds, in all pursuits. She represents the whole package for young women in D.C. whose lives in sports can be the best preparation for excelling in whatever they do, as Johnson has.”

The Mystics held a basketball clinic with for girls of Dunbar and McKinnley high schools who Johnson hopes will become future Washington Mystics players.

The girls were a bit relunctant to answer the call when Johnson asked "who wants to become a Washington Mystic", but eventually hands were raised.

Teammates Alana Beard, Marissa Coleman, and newly signed Katie Smith lead the clinic.

Johnson, who has always been passionate about youth is also the Ambassador for Care, involved in arts and entertainment (serving on President Barack Obama's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, part owner of the Washington Capitals an accomplished violinist, and the owner of Salamander Hospitality.

"Being on the court will teach you alot", Johnson told the girls. "It will teach you responsiblity, trusting one another, operating as a team. It will help you become organized. These are skills in life that you can take with you through high school, college, and later in life."

"Remember this moment", said Johnson, admonishing the girls that they can be anything in life they want to be.

Johnson continues to be inspired by her lady Mystics. I recall an event two years ago when Johnson said about her team members, "Sometimes they truely can take my breath away."

Dr. Johnson told the student athletes assembled that the Mystics are role models both on and off the court, and that she is proud to serve as their mentor, often taking them to board meetings to experience the business side of the sport.

Johnson is the first African American woman to own three sports teams, proving that girls who excel in sports, can excel in life.

The Mystics recently added Forward Carla Thomas as a free agent. A standout from Vanderbilt University, Thomas was drafted in the first round (10th overall) of the 2007 WNBA Draft by the Chicago Sky.
