The EagleBank Bowl announced that Temple will meet Army or UCLA in the 2009 game to be held Tuesday, December 29th in Washington, D.C.’s RFK Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN starting at 4:30 p.m.
“In either scenario, we feel we have a great matchup for this year’s EagleBank Bowl,” said Steve Beck, Executive Director of the EagleBank Bowl. “We look forward to hosting the players, coaches and their fans for a tremendous week of fun in the nation’s capital.”
Temple received an at-large invitation to the EagleBank Bowl and will be playing in their first bowl game in 30 years. The Owls have experienced a football resurgence under fourth-year head coach Al Golden, going 9-3 this season and tieing for first-place in the Mid-American Conference.
Temple’s opponent is contingent on the outcome of the Army-Navy game to be held Saturday in Philadelphia. If Army beats Navy, the Black Knights will advance to their first bowl game since 1996. If Army loses to Navy, Temple will face UCLA in the EagleBank Bowl.
In just his first season, Army head coach Rich Ellerson has guided the Black Knights to a 5-6 record, their most wins since 1996. Army is led by freshman quarterback Trent Steelman and sport one of the nation’s stingiest defenses, allowing just 309.9 yards and 22.4 points per game to rank 17th and 40th nationally in those respective categories. Josh McNary heads Army’s defensive attack, ranking second nationally in tackles for loss (2.05) and third in quarterback sacks (1.14).
With one of the youngest rosters in the country, UCLA won three straight games in November for a 6-6 record and would play in their first bowl game under head coach Rick Neuheisel. The Bruins have gotten it done with defense as they boast the nation’s interception leader in free safety Rahim Moore and defensive tackle Brian Price is tied for third nationally with 22.5 tackles for loss.
In the inaugural EagleBank Bowl in 2008, Wake Forest defeated Navy Midshipmen, 29-19, at before nearly 30,000 fans at RFK Stadium.

Howard's Brown Hits Game Winner
Lifts Team Over Hampton
Zykia Brown’s 3-pointer with two seconds left lifted Howard to a 48-47 victory over Hampton Saturday afternoon in the conference opener for both teams at Burr Gymnasium.
The Lady Bison led by 10 in the first half before Hampton rallied for a double-digit lead after the break. Howard (3-4, 1-0 MEAC) started chipping away at the lead with just over seven minutes remaining and cut an 11-point deficit down to four with 3:50 left. Tamoria Holmes hit a pair of free-throws with 1:24 remaining to close Bison within two points of the lead at 47-45 before Brown connected on a 3-pointer as time expired to give Howard the victory.
"I'm so proud of our team tonight," Howard coach Niki Reid Geckeler said. "We started off strong and I was pleased with the way we competed. We could have closed it out by hitting a few more free throws earlier in the game, but we played tough down to the final possession."
Brown finished with a game-high 16 points for the Bison and Saadia Doyle added 10 points and 11 rebounds, her sixth double-double of the year. Kara Smith added 10 points.
Bernadette Fortune’s 14 points led Hampton and Breanna Jones chipped in 13 for the Pirates. The loss dropped Hampton to 2-4 and 0-1 in conference play.
Howard had a six-point lead at the half but Hampton took an 8-0 run midway thru the second stanza for a 35-28 lead with 11:13 left. The Pirates extended its lead to 41-30 but Howard responded by outscoring Hampton 8-2 over the next few minutes. Doyle’s free-throws and a basket by Smith brought Howard within four points of the lead.
The teams traded free-throws and turnovers with neither gaining more than a four-point advantage before the Pirates held a 47-45 lead with 1:24 left.
Howard is off for one week and returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 12 with a matchup against cross-town rival George Mason. Game time at the Patriot Center is slated for 2 p.m.

The Win That Wasn't
Skins Lose To Saints. Dreadful. Just Dreadful. All that hard work for nil.
The Skins had everything going for them, and had everyone thinking the were going to pull off an upset over the then 11-0 New Orleans Saints.
The Skins started off on the good foot, with Fred Davis scoring the first touchdown of the game on a five yard pass from Jason Campbell just minutes into the first quarter.
With the field goal kick the Skins were off to an early ten point lead. A ten point margin that remained for most of three quarters.
Devin Thomas was on fire during the game scoring a 78 yard touchdown, his first of two on the day, making today's game his best of the season. (Thomas rushed for 100 yards on the game).
Surely, the Skins had this game in the bag.
Then the game somehow went terribly wrong.
For starters, Kareem Moore's intercepted a New Orleans pass but was somehow taken away from him by the Saints' Robert Meachem who took it in for a 53 yard touchdown.
After playing exceptionally well for most of the game (passing for 367 yards, 3 TDs) Jason Campbell threw for an interception that resulted in another TD for New Orleans.
Fast forward to what the Skins have had trouble doing all season long. Scoring in the red zone on a 3rd down. The Skins couldn't score the TD which resulted in kicker Shawn Suisham having to come in to score the point.
It's worked in the past. It should work now.
Not.
That was the missed kick -- heard around the NFL -- just 23 yards out that could have sealed the win for Washington with 1:56 to go in regulation.
It wasn't to be.
What was to be was Garrett Hartley's 18-yard field goal that sealed the 33-30 overtime win for the Saints.
Accepting the win (and the sweet revenge)former Redskins’ coordinator Greg Williams, said of his former team, “They played well, isolating our corners; the Redskins have nothing to hang their heads about."
While Williams is giving praise, fans and the Skins themselves, are still trying to figure out what went wrong.
“This season has been absolutely crazy”, blogs Rocky McIntosh.
“ Looking on the bright side, our team has looked more complete these last couple of weeks. It is the worst feeling in the world to play your guts out and then get to the end of the game and not be able to finish. Riding back from playing the Saints I just couldn't figure out why we didn't win that game. It almost feels like we have a two-minute curse. And the music at the stadium sure didn't help either.”
And there you have it, ladies and gentlemen. The long and short of it. The Saints go marching in, or rather back to New Orleans with a win; and the Redskins go in to that dark night - losing, yet again.

The remaining four. Redskins (3-9) vs Raiders (12/13), Giants (12/21), Cowboys (12/27), Charges (1/3).
Vick scored 2 TDs, too.
Poll: Portis and Cooley out. Are the Skins playing better? Leave a comment.
London Fletcher selected to USA Football/NFLPA "All Fundamentals Team", was named the Washington Redskins Man of the Year, which also makes him eligible for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. Go London!

Fill In The Blank!
That ________ is ___________!
Just when we thought the Salahi's breaching White House security was enough, the world finds out that Michaele Salahi has been living out her fantasies - in real time - for a long time.
As more and more 'episodes' of The Real Fraudulent - and Dysfunctional - Life of Michaele Salahi (I coined it first) unfold, we find that she's not only living out her dreams in the world of politics, but in the sports world, as well.
Michaele thought she was a former Redskins cheerleader in another life, and even went onto Fed Ex Field and performed during a Redskins game in September,(accepting the challenge).

I'm willing to bet there are some mental issues that need to be addressed with this chick and her husband. What else could it be?
Oh, I forgot. Fame and fortune.
For the record, former Redskins cheerleaders confirm that Michaele Salahi was never an official Redskins cheerleader.
The only events where the Salahi couple don't show up, are those they're invited to.
Hey Michaele, here's an invite you can actually participate in.
On Sunday, December 6, beginning at 11 am the United States Marine Corps will collect toys for their 2009 Toys for Tots Campaign before the Washington Redskins kick-off against the New Orleans Saints at FedEx Field.

A Marion Jones Comeback?
It's been two years since Marion Jones admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs and retired from track and field competition. She served six months in prison last year, because she lied about her drug use, but she's looking to get back in action – on the basketball court.
In an interview with the New York Times, Jones said that she's been working on her basketball game with hopes of joining a WNBA team. Jones played point guard for the University of North Carolina women's team and led the team to a 30–5 record and a National Championship in 1994.

"Back in May, when I got a call from someone in the NBA asking if I would possibly be interested in the WNBA, my reaction was, yeah, right," Jones told the New York Times. "I got off the phone, I thought about it a little bit, talked with my husband. I thought it would be an interesting journey if I decided to do this. It would give me an opportunity to share my message to young people on a bigger platform; it would give me an opportunity to get a second chance.
I think I can be an asset to a franchise, so it comes down to why not? Really. Why not?"

Wale Backing The Skins!
Set To Perform At Halftime During Redskins-Cowboys Game
As the Redskins prepare to take on the 11-0 New Orleans Saints, one fan makes preparations of his own.

Superstar in the making, and DC native, Wale is set to perform at the December 27th Redskins-Cowboy game at FedEx Field during halftime.
Wale, finishing up a tour with Jay-Z, will perform music from his latest project, Attention Deficit.
We caught up with him yesterday out at Redskins Park to talk a little football and music.
“I’m very passionate about the Redskins, and everything with this organization”, said Wale.
We asked Wale if he were to make a song about the Redskins, what would it be titled, given the rough (3-8) season the Skins have had this year.
“It would probably have to be about perseverance”, said Wale.
Wale was quick to point out how the Redskins rallied against Dallas two weeks ago during a tough 6-7 loss, and again against the Philadelphia Eagles in a 24-27 loss last Sunday.
“Every season ain’t going be sunny. This is where you fight. This is where you know who’s a fighter. I know for a fact that these guys are fighters. We have to show the world we’re fighters.”
The Redskins are preparing to face Saints who are coming to DC fresh off a 38-17 Monday Night Football victory over the New England Patriots, hoping to remain the reigning champs in the NFC South with a win over Washington.
Unphased, Wale tells us that anything can happen.
“Anything can go down on any given Sunday. I know a lot of the guys on the team. I have a lot of confidence in my team.”
Interesting To Note
The last meeting between the Skins and the Saints was on Sept. 14, 2008 when the Skins defeated the Saints 29- 24. Jason Campbell passed for 321 yards. Santana Moss ran for a 67-yard game winning touchdown with 3:29 remaining. The Saints' quarterback, Drew Brees threw for two interceptions.
Wale on his new found fame: There's a lot of battles you have fight. Not necessarily with the music, but with things you want to do in your regular life. Something as simple as going to the grocery store in the morning for Cornflakes, or The Blvd real quick to go get some sneakers. Some of those things I can't do at specific times."
Attention Deficit features the popular track, Pretty Girls. Wale tells us he's planning to shoot the video for the song in two weeks.
"I hope we can do it at Howard University, or Virginia State."
Attention Deficit is in stores now.

CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield National Half Marathon
Only Marathon Run Entirely Within the District of Columbia
The Greater Washington Sports Alliance is proud to announce CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst) as the title sponsor of the National Half Marathon, to be held Saturday, March 20, 2010, in conjunction with the 5th annual National Marathon. With this agreement extending through the 2011 event, CareFirst joins SunTrust Bank (National Full Marathon) as title sponsors of the only marathon run entirely within the District of Columbia.
“We are so excited to have CareFirst on board with this signature event,” said Robert Sweeney, President of the Greater Washington Sports Alliance. “The CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield National Half Marathon runs through historical neighborhoods and past Washington, D.C.’s monuments and memorials. It is America’s most prestigious running route.”
Widely viewed as one of the fastest growing half marathons in the country, a sellout field of over 5,000 runners signed up for the National Half Marathon in March of 2009. A significant increase in participation is anticipated in March of 2010 as 8,000 runners are expected to join the 12,000 combined runner field.
“As we look to grow our race and become one of America’s premier half marathons, it is imperative that we align ourselves with partners who share our vision,” said William Reifsnyder, Executive Race Director. “CareFirst brings a healthy message to our brand. Their presence leading up to the race and during the Health and Fitness Expo will be invaluable as we bring further attention to the fact that this race is not only great for the community but personally beneficial to each runner.”
“The National Half Marathon gives the District an opportunity to take center stage for health and wellness, something CareFirst strongly supports throughout our market region,” said Maria Harris Tildon, CareFirst Senior Vice President of Public Policy and Community Affairs. “We hope our sponsorship of the event will enhance awareness of the half marathon and draw even more runners to participate.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 60 percent of adults in the United States do not participate in the recommended amount of regular physical activity, with 25 percent of all adults not active at all. Routine fitness activities, such as training for running events, can help maintain good health and lower the costs associated with life-threatening diseases, such as Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.
The 5th Annual SunTrust National Marathon and CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield Half Marathon will be held Saturday, March 20, 2010. For more information or to register for the race go to www.nationalmarathon.com.

Football Legend Rocky Bleir Makes EagleBank Bowl PSA
Lends Support to Wounded Warrior Project
Former Pittsburgh Steeler and Vietnam veteran Rocky Bleier is appearing in a public service announcement campaign in support of the bowl’s charity partner, the Wounded Warrior Project.
The public service campaign is designed to raise awareness of the Wounded Warrior Project mission and highlight that every ticket sold for the game helps provide aid to these severely injured service members. The PSA will run on television and radio outlets in the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore markets.
Bleier wrote a book of his struggle to recover from his war wounds called Fighting Back: The Rocky Bleier Story.
“Rocky Bleier’s story of triumph against adversity is an inspiration to all Americans and we are honored he has joined in the EagleBank Bowl effort,” said Steve Beck, Executive Director of the EagleBank Bowl. “The Wounded Warrior Project provides much-needed aid to severely injured service members and every ticket purchased for the 2009 EagleBank Bowl helps our nation’s wounded warriors.”
At the height of the Vietnam War and following his rookie season with the Steelers, Rocky Bleier was drafted into the United States Army. Bleier was seriously wounded during combat when his platoon ran into an ambush and he received injuries from both rifle fire and grenade fragments. As a result of his injuries, Bleier was barely able to walk and his professional football career seemed destined to be finished.
For more than two years after the ambush, Bleier overcame obstacles and fought his way back to the football field. As a result of his tenacity and unyielding faith, Bleier was not only able to reclaim his spot with the Steelers, but he eventually became a starting running back and helped lead his team to four Super Bowl victories.
“I am where I am today in large part due to the help the Wounded Warrior Project provides and I am glad to have the opportunity to support the EagleBank Bowl through its public service announcement campaign,” said Rocky Bleier.
"We want to recognize and pay tribute to the dedication and sacrifices of the men and women of our United States Armed forces," added Ronald Paul, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of EagleBank. "The Wounded Warrior Project provides these individuals with a tremendous opportunity to make a successful transition into the private sector and have a chance for economic prosperity."
This year’s EagleBank Bowl is set for Tuesday, December 29 at 4:30 p.m. at RFK Stadium.

A 'Skins Merry Shopping Spree!
The Washington Redskins kicked off the Holiday season in style today by taking local kids Christmas shopping at a Target near Redskins Park.
The Renaldo and LaTanya Wynn Family of Faith Charity made sure Christmas (would come early) and a little brighter for local students of elementary aged students by treating each student to a $100 shopping spree.
LaTanya shared with us Christmas as she was growing up and the need to give back to the community."We were wondering how we could give back and help kids, and have it be fun. My mom being a single mother, worked hard to try to have Christmas presents for us every Christmas, and it was four of us, so we wanted to help single parent families, and kids less fortunate."
With help from Redskins players Shawn Suisham, quarterback Jason Campbell, Mike Williams, Will Montgomery, Hunter Smith, Rocky McIntosh, wide receiver Marko Mitchell, along with the Target staff, the kids went aisle to aisle shopping for the toy of their choice. (Thoughtful: Some kids surprised their siblings and parents with gifts, as well).
Carts began to fill up during the thirty minute, timed shopping extravaganza that caught a few unsuspecting Target customers off guard as they reveled at the sight of their favorite Redskins player.
LaTanya and Renaldo began the initiative in Jacksonville and never expected their good dead would be such a hit.
"We never thought it would it grow into something so big, but it's everything good just to see the kids happy. It's been a blessing for us just to see them happy."
Most seen toys in the shopping cart: Hello Kitty, video games (Modern Warfare II/Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed II), clothes, twins doll set, cell phones, board games, GI Joe, Transformers, and toy cars. Redskin Player Christmas Wish List:
On LaTanya Wynn's wish list: "I just want my family to be blessed, and healed, and whole", she said.
That was the sentiment of most Redskins players when we asked what they wanted for Christmas. There was a request, however, for a white, fully loaded, BMW 750LI (22s, white interior) from this guy, and Mike Williams and Doug Dutch both wished for a few more wins this season.
North Pole Santa vs South Pole Santa: As Explained by offensive tackle Mike Williams:
"Santa Claus is at the North Pole Santa. I'm more like a South Pole Santa Claus. We serve collard greens down there at the South Pole. Collard greens, corn bread, that's at the South Pole. North Pole you get pumpkin pie. South Pole Santa, sweet potatoe pie."See photos of the shopping spree.
