What Is All This Talk About Trading Me, My Dear?

In an unconfirmed gesture, one that had many in the DC area left wondering why, the Redskins were talking trading their star quarterback, Jason Campbell for Denver Broncos' Jay Cutler.

Cutler eventually went to the Chicago Bears, and the Redskins brought in free agent quarterback, Byron Leftwich to work out at Redskins park.

Neither Cutler, nor Leftwich, will become a Redskin, and Skins' EVP of Operations, Vinnie Cerrato had only this to say.

"We met with Jason today [Friday] and had a candid discussion. We told Jason that when Jay Cutler became available we, like many other NFL teams, spoke with the Broncos.

"We are all on the same page and we are moving forward."

Moving forward with what? Scoping out more players to replace Campbell? The Skins still have yet to extend Campbell's contract, so fans still don't know if Jason will continue to be 'shopped around'.

When we spoke to Campbell earlier this year, Campbell had this to say about returning to the lineup next season...

DC UrbanSports: One last question. I’m getting this from the horse’s mouth. Are you coming back next season?

Jason Campbell: [Laughing] “Yeah, I’ll be back.

(Read entire interview here).

I've heard of 'Dirty Diana', but Sleazy Cerrrato?

Abe Called It! Wizards Win It!

Wizards Wonderfully Defeat Cleveland Cavaliers, 109-101.

Still believing in his team, Washington Wizards owner Abe Polin told DC UrbanSports in an exclusive interview after the game:

“I called it. I predicted that we would win. When all our guys are hurt, and they come back, we have a competitive team. We can compete with anybody.”
That’s exactly true.

Returning to the Wizards’ lineup were Brendan Haywood (his second game back since a wrist injury held him out for much of the season), Gilbert Arenas, (his second appearance this season since the 98-96 loss to Detroit on March 28), and Caron Butler (also returning since the Detroit game).

Even LeBron James (31 points) knows the difference, telling us, “We can’t win when they (Wizards) are shooting 50% from the field.

“Certain teams match up with you really well, and this is the team that matches up with us really well.”

When asked by another reporter if it was an embarrassment to have lost to the Wizards (the Wizards are regarded as the worst NBA team in the Eastern conference), James replied (in almost defending-the-Wizards-like-fashion),
“These guys are NBA players. They work just as hard as we do to get to this level. It’s an NBA team. It’s not an embarrassment. There’s going to be games in the NBA where you don’t win, and there’s going to be games where you win, when you shouldn’t have won. But to look at it to say it’s an embarrassment (to have lost to the Wizards) is disrespectful to them.”
Cavalier head coach, Mike Brown knows all too well about the Wizards' abilities, telling reporters in a post-game interview, “They led in second chance points (15). Our shots went up, and all of our guys stood and watched, and the Wizards got rebounds and got uncontested layups.
"They did a tremendous job. They’ve given us problems every year in the regular season since I’ve been here. They have our number, and it was no different tonight.”
Overall the Wizards did a phenomenal job - shooting 50.6% from the field, 86.7% from the free-throw line, leaving Wizards fans, and Cleveland fans alike, with a new found respect for the team.

Caron Butler was the lead scorer with 25, followed by Antawn Jamison with 19. Brendan Haywood led the team in defensive rebounds with ten, a post he shared with team mate Dominic McGuire. Gil Arenas continues to improve his teammates' scoring, dishing out, for the second straight game, another 10 assists.

The Wizards beat Cleveland on January 4th of this year, 80-77. They are in Miami this Saturday to face the Heat before they again face the Cavaliers in Cleveland for the last time in regular season action.

This season, unlike the last three, will be one where the Wizards and the Cavaliers won't faceoff in playoff action. The Wizards, 18-59, will not make the playoffs this year, but by all accounts - and with all healthy - they'll be back next season with a vengeance.

Heavy star power at the game: Redskins Fred Smoot, Washington Caps, Alex Ovechkin; Redskins Carlos Rogers; Washington Kastles’, Mark Ein; Washington Caps owner Ted Leonsis; former Redskins LeVar Arrington, and others.

Cleveland Ties: Brendan Haywood was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the 20th overall pick in 2001; Cavs Head Coach Mike Brown spent three years in Washington beginning in 1997; two years as an assistant under Bernie Bickerstaff, and one year as a pro scout. Cavs guard, Delonte West attended DC's Eleanor Roosevelt HS, and Cleveland's Ben Wallace played 147 games for the Wizards from 1996-99.

Encouraging Youth To Pursue Their Dreams!

I always enjoy when grown ups, pro athletes included, help steer young people in the right direction.

Check out our own Washington Redskins' wide receiver, Santana Moss (minus the cornrows and do rag) here speaking to young kids at JP Travelle High School in Coral Springs, FL as he inspires youth to dream their dreams. (Video)

Certainly a welcome change from all the other distractions in sports in recent days.

Moss also holds a summer football camp in our area for youths. To sign up or to get more info visit www.tanaman89.com. You can see our photos from last year's camp here.

Murphy Jensen Selected As New Coach!
Murphy is one of the most recognized and entertaining personalities in tennis stemming from both his playing and, more recently, his TV career. Murphy burst onto the international tennis scene in 1993 when he teamed with his brother Luke to capture the French Open Men's Doubles Championship and played ten seasons of World TeamTennis during his career. Murphy and his brother combined to win three more tour doubles titles before Murphy turned his attention to television. Murphy hosts "Murphy's Guide" and "Open Access" for the Tennis Channel and has been featured in Sports Illustrated and Rolling Stone.

A New Season!
Battling against the Kastles in DC this season are Venus Williams of the Philadelphia Freedoms (July 7), Anna Kournikova of the St. Louis Aces (July 8) and John McEnroe of the New York Sportimes (July 16).

The July 7 match marks Venus Williams' tennis debut in Washington.

Chili Anyone?

It may be Spring, and the cold wintry weather may be behind us, but apparently it's always the right time for a bowl of chili.

At least it is for the DC101 Chili Cook-Off.

The Chili Cook-Off features a fierce competition between 101 chili cooks in four categories: Red Chili, Green Chili, Freestyle, and Salsa. The winner of the Red Chili category will compete in the International Chili Society World Championship this fall.

Celebrity judges include Washington Redskins tight end Chris Cooley and safety Reed Doughty, whose son received a kidney transplant in March 2008.

The event, set for May 16, from 12 noon to 9pm at RFK Stadium*, celebrates its 30th anniversary and benefits the National Kidney Foundation.

The DC101 Chili Cook-Off is D.C.'s biggest one-day rock festival featuring top bands and dozens of the area's best chili cooks competing for top honors and is one of the largest events of its kind in the nation. Last year's Cook-Off attracted 22,000 people and raised over $1 million dollars for the first time to support the National Kidney Foundation's programs in research, patient services, professional and public education, and organ donation awareness.

Advance tickets are $35 and go on sale this Friday at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster. Tickets at the gate are $50.

This event is in conjunction with the DC Sports and Entertainment Commission. Please visit www.dcsec.com for more info.

*RFK Stadium is easily accessible by Metro on the Blue and Orange lines (Stadium/Armory station) or parking is available on-site.
